Essex News Ahead Of Somerset Match

Essex have named a 13-man squad for their LV County Championship match against Somerset at The Ford County Ground, starting on Wednesday (September 5).

Varun Chopra returns to the four-day squad after featuring for the 2nd XI in their Championship match against Kent last week.

Ravinder Bopara and Alastair Cook are still away with England during their ODI series with India.

Essex go into the game knowing only victory will keep alive their hopes of finishing above Nottinghamshire in the second Division Two promotion spot. Meanwhile, Somerset, having already clinched promotion, require 10 points to take the title.

Please note: play in LV County Championship matches in September is scheduled to start at 10.30am.

Essex First-Team Coach Paul Grayson told the Essex CCC website (www.essexcricket.org.uk) ahead of the game:

“We played well against Somerset down at Taunton a few weeks ago and felt we would win that game on the last day (only for rain to force its abandonment as a draw). Coming into the return game Somerset are already promoted so hopefully they will arrive with a few hangovers and we can catch them out a little bit. If we play well over the four days I’m convinced we’ll beat Somerset.”

Check back on the Essex CCC website later today for a ‘Paul Grayson Audio Special’ when the First-Team Coach talks about:

• His first couple of months in his new role
• Plans to bring in more new players for next season
• His hopes for a strong finish to the 2007 season
• The next batch of promising youngsters at the Club.
