Essex News Ahead Of Worcestershire Clash

Essex Eagles have named a 12-man squad for their NatWest Pro40 match against Worcestershire Royals at The Ford County Ground today (Thursday August 2).

Eighteen-year-old batsman Tom Westley is added to the XI on duty in Sunday’s Pro40 fixture against Hampshire Hawks at the Rose Bowl.

After two away matches (the washout at Lancashire and the weekend two-run defeat at Hampshire) the Eagles finally get the opportunity to launch their defence of the Division One title at Chelmsford.

Danish Kaneria (back) and Tim Phillips (shoulder) are both still unavailable through injury.

Essex First-Team Coach Paul Grayson spoke to the Essex CCC website ahead of the game about his desire to record a first victory of the campaign and also provided an update on Danish Kaneria’s injury situation:

“Having lost to Hampshire at the weekend, victory against Worcestershire becomes even more vital to get our competition going. We are capable of winning all of our remaining six matches – I believe it and the players do too. By looking at their eyes after the Hampshire game they were hurt by the defeat but we have a lot of winners in our dressing room and I’m sure they will bounce back.

“Danish Kaneria has been doing two sessions a day in the gym on his core stability to improve his back following recent injury. By all accounts he’s been working really hard and is feeling good. We don’t want to rush him back too soon so are hopeful he will be available for Southend (next week).”

Meanwhile, Essex Physio Mark Thomas gave the following update on Tim Phillips:

“Tim Phillips had an injection into his left shoulder on Monday under ultrasound guidance. This has had an immediate improvement on his symptoms and it is hoped he will be fit to play next week.”

SQUAD: Mark Pettini, Varun Chopra, Ravinder Bopara, Grant Flower, Tom Westley, James Foster, Ryan ten Doeschate, James Middlebrook, Andy Bichel, Graham Napier, Jahid Ahmed, Tony Palladino.
