Essex Ready For Arabian Nights
Essex get the Pro ARCH Trophy underway against the UAE national side at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium on Wednesday (March 12).
The pre-season tournament in the Emirates, which lasts until March 28, also features Lancashire, Somerset, Sussex and Yorkshire.
Essex hand debuts to their three new signings – opening batsman Jason Gallian and pace bowlers Chris Wright and David Masters – for the 50-overs-per-side day-night fixture that starts at 2pm.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old Academy Professional Adam Wheater gets an early opportunity to impress. The wicketkeeper-batsman made his first-team debut last August in the Twenty20 Floodlit Cup against Derbyshire at The Ford County Ground.
Fast bowler Maurice Chambers is also in line to feature in the first-team for the first time since the 2007 pre-season after a lumbar stress fracture kept him out of the reckoning for the entirety of the following campaign.
Captain Mark Pettini told the Essex CCC website (www.essexcricket.org.uk) he is looking forward to leading his side out for the first time since the end of the 2007 season:
“We’ve had three training sessions since arriving in Dubai early on Monday but everyone is now eager to get out on the field for some match action. Having had a useful period out here last year we are hoping the step-up in opposition this year will prove to be even more beneficial this pre-season.”
