Essex have signed Australian leg-spinner Bryce McGain as their overseas player until the end of the season following the departures of Danish Kaneria and Scott Styris.
Kaneria is in action with Pakistan and Styris is set to play for New Zealand in Sri Lanka while McGain made history last year when he made his Test debut at 36 against South Africa - the oldest Australian debutant since Bob Holland.
“We have been searching for a new overseas player for a while now. It has not proved easy to replace Danish (Kaneria). With the current weather and the upcoming fixtures at grounds like Southend & Colchester we feel Bryce will be the ideal addition as a spin bowler," head coach Paul Grayson told www.essexcricket.org.uk.
“We can now look forward to the rest of the season having received good feedback from various sources regarding the pedigree of Bryce. He had a good season last year with Victoria. We have been scouting around and Bryce is certainly the best available bowler. He will be able to play across all formats of the game and we will be able to include him in the squad for Sunday’s away game and also the LV= game that starts on Thursday next week (29th July) away at Kent."
