Essex Team News Ahead Of Glamorgan Match
Former Essex seam bowler Andrew McGarry has been re-registered by the County and is set to feature with the home side limited in their seam bowling options due to injuries.
Jahid Ahmed (back) is still unable to return to action while Graham Napier (elbow), Tony Palladino (abdominal strain) and Darren Thomas (shoulder) continue their comebacks in the Second Eleven Championship at Hampshire this week. Grant Flower is missing with a hamstring injury and will undergo a scan today (Tuesday). Batsman Andy Flower (hip) is also still sidelined.
Mervyn Westfield has recovered sufficiently from the back strain sustained in the opening LV County Championship match against Derbyshire to also be named in the 2nd XI squad to play at the Rose Bowl.
Meanwhile, Maurice Chambers is undergoing a period of rehabilitation to strengthen his lumbar spine to allow him to bowl without risk.
25-year-old McGarry made his senior debut for Essex in 1999, and made 15 first-class appearances for the County (as well as playing in 16 one-day games) before his release at the end of the 2003 season.
Essex Captain Ronnie Irani spoke to the ECCC website (www.essexcricket.org.uk) about Andrew McGarry and the injury front:
“We have registered Andrew McGarry following some excellent pre-season performances. He’s an Essex boy and we are looking forward to seeing him back in an Essex shirt. With the state of our injuries at the moment he has done enough to justify returning to the set-up. By the end of the Championship game against Derbyshire we were left with two fit seamers – Ryan ten Doeschate and Alex Tudor – and we need at least three. He’s not on a contract so we’ll see how things go from match to match.
On Essex’s seam bowling injury situation
“It’s too soon to say when any of our other bowlers will be able to return for sure but we are hoping to have Tony Palladino back for the weekend.”
