Essex opened their pre-season with a six-wicket win over a Fly Emirates XI in the opening match of the 2009 Pro ARCH Trophy in Sharjah.
The reigning Friends Provident Trophy champions were made to work hard for their win as UAE batsman Arshad Ali scored an unbeaten 109 to propel his side to a competitive score of 277 for six. Mervyn Westfield and Jahid Ahmed picked up two wickets apiece and David Masters was the other wicket-taker.
A relatively young Essex side came through the challenge with Ryan ten Doeschate scoring an unbeaten 81 and new signing Matthew Walker making 50 before he was forced to retire hurt. Captain Mark Pettini made 41 from the to order to set things up and although Arshad Ali took two wickets, Essex got home with three overs to spare.
Essex are in Group A of the tournament along with the Emirates XI, Lancashire and Sussex while Group B comprises Surrey, reigning champions Yorkshire, the UAE and Middlesex.
