Sunrisers Hyderabad 158-2 (Warner 69no) beat
Gujarat Lions 154 (Kishan 61) by eight wickets
53rd match, Indian Premier League, Kanpur
David Warner and Vijay Shankar scored fifties as Sunrisers Hyderabad chased down 155 runs against Gujarat Lions in 18.1 overs with eight wickets in hand to confirm a berth in the play-off of the Indian Premier League.
Hyderabad won the toss and decided to field first. Dwayne Smith (54) and Ishan Kishan (61) struck seven boundaries and three sixes between them in the powerplay as Gujarat went on to post 61 for naught.
The onslaught from the duo continued as they completed the 100-run stand in the 10th over with Kishan completing his maiden IPL fifty off 27 deliveries.
Rashid Khan (3-34) provided some respite for Hyderabad when he trapped Smith LBW in the 11th over. That triggered a collapse in the Gujarat line-up as Mohammad Siraj (4-32) accounted for Kishan and Suresh Raina (2) in the 13th over while Rashid removed Dinesh Karthik (0) and Aaron Finch (2) in the next over and were reduced to 123 for five.
Ravindra Jadeja (20 not out) tried his best to provide the late flourish but Hyderabad bowlers were clinical in the end overs to bowl out Gujarat for 154 in 19.2 overs. The home lost all the 10 wickets for 43 runs.
Shikhar Dhawan (18) set the tone for the chase with four boundaries in the first two overs but Praveen Kumar (2-22) bowled a brilliant third over removing the Hyderabad opener and Moises Henriques (4) to reduce the visitors to 25 for two.
That's the only success, Gujarat managed as Warner (69 not out) and Shankar (63 not out) joined forces for an unbeaten 133 run stand to take the team through in 18.1 overs with eight wickets in hand. Warner reached his fifty off 41 deliveries while Shankar brought his own in 34 balls.
The win has taken Hyderabad to the second spot in the rankings and also sealed a place in the play-off. Siraj was awarded the player of the match for his four-wicket haul.
