Topic: 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup Final Posted: 25 April 2007 at 6:26pm |
So, with Sri Lanka already through and Australia looking set to join them in the final I thought that now would be the right time to make a thread for the World Cup final on Saturday in Barbados.
So with the big final just 3 days away, who do you think will win out of the three remaining teams, do you think it will be a close and good match and would you be surprised to see some upsets?
I hate to say it, but I personally think the Aussies will win, they've just looked too strong for anyone in this tournament in my opinion, I'd be very surprised if anybody could beat them at all, having said that there could be a surprise, and surprises do happen at the most inconvenient of times, so I wouldn't put a shock out of the question. I personally hope that this World Cup final will be a good fought and close match and I'm really hoping for an epic like some of the games we've had so far in this tournament (Ireland V Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka V England, England V West Indies), it would be a good end to an otherwise disappointing and tragic World Cup.
So what do you think...

Whatever gamble that mahela took seemed to have worked for him.
He hid murali and vaas from the indians in india, then they stopped indians WC dreams.
Hopefully the MVM trio will do it for the lions.

They sure do, Lanka has got this, the aussies will be disoriented in the beginning as they havent seen the MVM trio, and SL has seen all of their bowling. This will be the match for Jayasuriya

At the moment it seems that the Kangaroos will swallow the lions but yeah I am sure it will be an exciting cricket match and I hope the Aussies win.

Please , please , just let's have something to watch. I
don't care who wins , but I want to see both sides perform at their
best. If that happens we should be in for a real treat.

The standard of umpiring, specifically during the SL-NZ semis
was extremely poor. The general feeling now is that available technology must be used for LBW decisions as well. The final result of a game
may be swayed by one or two bad decisions and if that happens the whole purpose
of the World Cup would become meaningless and a joke! Therefore the ICC should
seriously consider LBW / bat/pad and other tricky decisions to be referred to
the third umpire for the SRI LANKA AUSTRALIA FINAL on the 28th,
provided both teams agree. I have no doubt that there would be not be any
objections to this from either team.

Is'nt there any way of bombarding the ICC with such a request?
The importance of the correct decisions being given, every single one, cannot be over-stressed, for obvious reasons!

proper matches involve human error, play computer games if you want perfection.

From a spectators point of view you want decisions to be as good as possible, though its not always the case. The umpiring in both semi-finals was really poor. It wouldn't have changed the result but its nice to think that umpires will have little effect on the outcome of a match.
For the sake of an fair/interesting final I hope the umpires do their best.

142no, Agreed that proper matches involve human error. But those errors should be those of the players! Not anyone else's ! bond2322, i fully agree with you. But having the required technology and not using it .. seems rather silly

11-1-11 Is history going to repeat……….?.
This is something I figured out at the beginning of the World Cup 2007 tournament, however I kept it for myself over the last month or so. There had been numerous instances in the past where numerals have played intriguing parts in certain world events and most of these are discovered in the post-incident period rather than beforehand. May be my imagination is running riot or a tinge of fallacy is creeping in. But I could not help thinking about it.
The last time Sri Lanka won the world cup was in 1996. To be precise, it was 17 March 1996 and I still possess the VHS video of the highlights. The opponents were Australia. The final this time is on 28 April 2007. And that is exactly 11 years, 1 month and 11 days from 17 March 1996. I couldn’t help wondering about this unusual numeral happenstance and its potential impacts.
Please don’t think this is uncanny. If Sri Lanka-Australia final is going to take place again, it is my belief that history is going to repeat and it would be a similar state of affairs as in 1996.
11111, and I call that as ‘extended Nelson’ in cricket. Nelson is considered to be extremely unlucky and this belief is very strongly held in Australia. In the 1954-55 Ashes defeat by Len Hutton’s England, Australia was dismissed for 111 in the 3rd Test. Also in the famous 1981 Headingley test, Australia was dismissed for 111 to give Mike Brearley’s England an unprecedented win.
11111, is it a mere coincidence? On 28 April 2007, we can get the answer at the Sri Lanka-Australia showdown……..

I don't understand why they don't get a second opinion from the square leg umpire to check the height of close LBWs. It would reduce the errors by a lot without introducing any technology.

I've heard that theory and its a mere coindence. Don't get caught up in that kind of stuff. Its evident everywhere but its relevance isn't.

Remember friend, unlucky 111 (Nelson) is believed by Australia and England. Not by Sri Lanka !!
