in front of the chairman of selectors as well; though by all accounts he was only there to watch some whippersnapper bowling for Lancs - Freddie something or other

So he was and the lad did nip one out though - maybe he's got a future in the game.

so far so good mate - a wicket in his very first over for Leics! (and all the sweeter as it is in-form old boy Darren Maddy too!) |

yes a promising start - Maddy with his second delivery then Bell was dropped off the 7th so it could have been even better

Nice to see Simon Jones take 5 wickets in a one dayer yesterday.
All the talk of recent years has been about Flintoff's operations , but
Jones has also had 3 years of turmoil. Whether he'll be as quick
as he was in 2005 remains to be seen , but it's good to see him back on
the park after so long.

The incentive of playing an Ashes Test in Cardiff will fire him up I reckon

He'd have enjoyed bowling on the pitch there on Friday night for the ground's debut - plenty of movement and variable bounce as Gloucestershire rained on Glamorgan's new home debut.

An Ashes Test ? I think he's just more than happy to be
playing again mate , but Welsh home crowd and that baggy green
cap might well put a yard on each delivery , if selected.

Jones was bowling again towards the end of last season but was just going through his action to get used to bowling again. I think that this season will be when he gets his pace back and will trouble plenty of batsmen. Edited by The Tyke - 14 May 2008 at 3:31pm |

Let's hope so Tykey. For me , Jones was the finest 4th seamer in any attack around the world in 2005.

More good news for Simon Jones supporters after he took a 5 wicket haul
yesterday against Gloucestershire. That's his 1st five-fer in the
longer version of the game since the 4th Ashes test of 2005.
Grand to see all his hard work paying off , maybe his test career isn't over yet. |

He seems to be coming along nicely, and keeping under the radar too with all the attention on Flintoff. Have you seen any mentions of how quickly he is bowling so far this season?

Anyone as surprised as I am that JP hasn't mentioned Somerset's
meteoric rise to the top of the county championship table after belting
Surrey ?
Very modest is our JP. |

I've been saying we've got a very good team at the moment, and it's only now that people are starting to listen!
The Championship isn't won in May, but it's certainly good to see us right up there - we are the only team in the division, and one of only three (Leics and Warwicks are the other) in the country yet to be beaten in a four-day match. Good news that caddi£k is on his way back and could play against Yorkshire on Friday. Friends Provident Quarter Final against Kent comes first though, a bit too soon for him. |

What an innings from Graham Napier. He's just broke the world record for most number of sixes by an individual in T20, with 16 of them.
He finished on 152* from 58 balls, the highest individual score in the English domestic T20.
Well done Napier.

It's worth noting that he came in at No 3 as well in the 2nd or 3rd over so you have to assume he would easily have beaten McCullum's world record had he batted all 20.
Just think how bad it might have been had Robin Martin-Jenkins not bowled so well (4 overs for 17).... |

No, I think that was his first hundred in any limited overs format. He is more of a quick 25-then-out sort of player.

He doesn't get much chance normally. Essex don't play him in the FC side and in limited overs they normally send him in at 7 or 8.
It was only with Galleon arguing with the coaches to get him up the order that he got put in at 3.

Doh !! Sorry Clobs , I'm rather run down at the moment and the ole grey matter is curdled - the result of contracting a typically unfriendly Southern African bacterium - tis a right sod ! Edited by Sledger - 27 June 2008 at 2:13pm |

Righto Tykey! Let's hope it's not a flash in the pan and the lad brings some much needed oomph into English cricket. Who knows , he might just be that someone special to get England from a torpid unit into a dynamic one that scares Australia ! (these drugs are strong!) |

Yorkshire make it through to the quarter finals with a dominating performance against Notts.
Have to say though that the groundsmen should be ashamed by that wicket.
They knew that Yorkshire like using the spinners to attack and our seamers are good at taking the pace off with cutters and they gave us a wicket that suited us rather than their own side.
That being said, Rashid bowled superbly with 4-24 off his 4 overs. He should have had a run out as well but the 3rd umpire made a big mess of it.
I'm annoyed again with Gough though. Gave himself 4 overs and got hit for 29 when Pyrah had bowled 3 overs for just 18 runs. Pyrah is probably the most underrated of the bowlers.
And for the quarter finals we drew.... Durham at Chester Le Street. I'm sick of seeing them
Should be a good match, providing we don't have any rain.

Simon Jones takes another fiver-fer against Leicester - this time in
the 2nd division of the county championship. I hope the selectors
are looking on - the lad's strike rate is very impressive after such a
lengthy time out of the game.

Fine win for Lancashire at The Rose Bowl , ending with a little biffing
by Freddie. That's probably the last they'll see of the big man
for quite some time , I hope they can keep up the challenge without him.
