ASHLEY Giles today admitted he is “extremely disappointed” by Younis Khan’s decision to tour the West Indies with Pakistan in April and May, ruling the player out of Warwickshire’s line-up for the first six weeks of the 2011 season. And a big question mark now hangs over whether the former Pakistan captain will join the Bears at all, having dropped a wrecked the county’s planning even before setting foot inside Edgbaston. Ever since signing a two-season deal as Warwickshire’s overseas player early in the winter, Khan had insisted that he would be available for all their matches during those seasons. That was reiterated personally by the player to director of cricket Giles as recently as last month. Such a pledge was a pleasant surprise for the Bears, Khan having patched up his differences with the Pakistan Cricket Board and returned to his national team’s fold. But, the contract having been signed, Warwickshire took him at his word. Then last week came a king-sized u-turn by the 33-year-old. He announced his intention to be with Pakistan in the Caribbean this spring so his declaration that he will be with the Bears in time for the championship opener against Somerset at Taunton has turned out to be hogwash. |

Why should Giles be disappointed? Is he nuts? Who'd not go on an international tour to play county games? Probably only Marcus Trescothick but he has more than good reasons to.

Probably because he signed a contract and gave his word? Then again, contracts are worthless these days, but your word is oak!? Maybe i'm just old fashioned?

At that time Younis probably thought he'd never play for Pakistan again. But, we all on this forum knew that a ban in Pakistan doesn't mean anything more than just a temporary hot topic in the press!

Somerset v Bears
Varun Chopra completed a superb double century for Warwickshire on the second morning, continuing in the same vein as on the opening day.
There was a fifteen minute delay for rain but the overnight pair of Chopra and Woakes continued from where they had left off the previous evening, completing their century partnership while Varun Chopra passed the double century landmark for the first time in his career. He was evntually out, lbw to Mendis for 210 but Chris Woakes 94* continued to play in a forceful manner, completing his half century and with Ant Botha 17* took the Bears to lunch on 543-7 having added one hundred and twenty seven runs in the session. Woakes quickly completed his fourth career century after the break and added one hundred and ten for the eighth wicket with Botha before he drove to Kirby for 129. Botha was last out for a useful sixty four as the Bears recorded their highwst total for fifteen year and the sixth highest ever when closing on 642. In reply Somerset survived nine testing overs to go to tea on thity seven without loss. Andrew Miller struck in the first over after the interval when Marcus Trescothick's outside edge flew to Darren Maddy at slip and the Somerset skipper went for eighteen before a useful partnership between Suppiah and Compton added seventy three before a full blooded cut from Suppiah 62 was well taken in the gulley by Chopra to the batsman's disbelief. Chris Woakes then joined in, taking the wickets of Compton lbw for eighteen and then the prized scalp of James Hildreth, playing on for just five with Somerset 123-4. More success came in the next over when Clarke collected a second wicket as Buttler edged to Rich Johnson, keeping for the injured Ambrose, without scoring and then Kieswetter, nine picks Clarke out in the slips to give Woakes a third wicket after Trego had been put down in the slips in the same over. Bad light brought an end to proceedings with seven overs left in the day and Somerset on 147-6 still trailing by 495 runs. |

Nice for Woakes, that's two hundreds in his last few knocks after one for the England Lions, I would say doing well for the full national side with the bat has given him a real surge of confidence.

Record breaking Warwickshire beat Somerset by an innings and 382 runs at Taunton after lunch on the third day, the sixth-largest margin of defeat in the history of the County Championship and the largest since 1921. It was also Somerset's largest defeat since 1895. What a start to the season |

There's all sorts of interesting achievements being made in the Leics game today, admittedly only against Loughborough. James Taylor has completed his 3rd FC double century, having only just turned 21. 17 year old prospect Shiv Thakor, who has been with the club since under 11's, has a century in his first FC innings, and the pair's partnership is currently at 321, the county's 7th highest of all time for any wicket.

Taylor wound up with 237, his highest career score so far. Thakor made 134 and is now Leics' youngest ever centurian. Their partnership of 330 is the county's highest ever for the 5th wicket, and 6th highest overall.

Impressive stuff. England's batting has looked the best it has in a long time I reckon. Trott has been absolutely fantastic and Cook's return to form in the Ashes has been a blessing. Won't hurt to have a new young star in the wings like Taylor, especially with Collingwood now retired in test cricket. Does the kid bowl at all by any chance?

Cook's Ashes form has been carried over into the county championship Mikey - another hundred yesterday. Young Taylor just seems to get better and better Clobs - he has a real appetite for runs doesn't he.

Taylor does bowl legbreaks as it happens, but only very occasionally, and not especially consistently! He is also brilliant in the field. I don't think he will be in England contention this year, with Morgan, Bopara and probably Hildreth all ahead of him in the queue, but I am pretty sure his time will come

Probably safe that he's not thrown into the deep end too early, but if this kid has the temperament to make that many big scores then it shows that he's got a pretty mature, level head on his shoulders (although Vinod Kambli made a couple of 200 in tests for India and didn't even make it to 20 tests). We talk a lot about converting starts into 100s, but it's nice to see guys converting 100s into BIG 100s. That's a very important component of any top order batsman's game.
I tell you what Clobber, another bloke by the name of Brian Lara had a knack of making 200s, was a brilliant catcher and bowled occasional leg breaks ![]() Cook has been a revelation, I can envisage him being the England test captain next summer or the summer after too. Although Strauss impressed in the Ashes too! (Unfortunately for Australia !)Edited by Mikey - 21 April 2011 at 2:32pm |

A ton for Ravi Bopara today, he is in good form just at the right moment, and the press seem to think he is currently leading the race to take over Collingwood's spot in the Test team.
The Sri Lankan's tour match with the Lions is likely to be interesting as all the main candidates (Bopara, Morgan, Hildreth and Taylor) are set to play in that game. It looks like one of them may have to open the batting though. Other notable selections for the Lions are the returning Graham Onions, and Samit Patel appears to finally have been forgiven for being a bit lardy. |

Read Yousuf scored a marvelous ton on a horrible pitch. One that Ashley Giles called the 'best that he saw'. Pity he is not in the West Indies representing Pakistan.

Warwickshire have been docked eight County Championship points after their Edgbaston pitch used for the Worcestershire match was rated "poor". An England & Wales Cricket Board panel comprising David Hughes and Tony Pigott ruled the pitch had demonstrated "excessive unevenness of bounce." Worcestershire batsman Vikram Solanki was taken to hospital after being hit on the head by a delivery in the game. The panel had already convened to look at the pitch before Solanki was struck. Hughes had arrived at Edgbaston on Thursday to take a look at the strip and in Friday's shortened, rain-hit third day 12 wickets fell. The deduction means Warwickshire now have 45 points, though the Bears could offset that by going on to win the match. After declaring on 173-8, having not enforced the follow-on, Warwickshire had the visitors on 36-3 before rain stopped play. |

Why have they let play to carry on if the pitch has been deemed dangerous to play on. Hoping well for Solanki.

Yousuf scored a ton in the first inning and a nearly run-a-ball 68 in the second. And some other guy also scored a fifty. So the pitch was probably not as horrible or it was just a masterpiece from Yousuf. Were the days of uncovered pitches any easier? Maybe some of the older guys can help me out here.

Andrew Strauss had his first hit of the year today, making 151 against the Sri Lankan tourists - he's a class act Straussy, who I don't think gets as much respect for his batting as he deserves.

By most accounts, Yousuf's knocks were exceptional with many saying that was the worst pitch they've ever seen in county cricket.
On another theme from above, I see James Taylor as a future England regular and probable captain - but not for a few years yet. |

Yousuf's knock was a gem , by all accounts. On surfaces that are well below that expected in 1st class cricket it's the batsmen with the soundest technique who come through. Shot selection is crucial too , especially shots fraught with danger are no-nos and put to bed.

One to keep an eye on guys
CRICKET'S rising star Chris Metters has been dubbed the 'Ice Man' after his dream debut for Warwickshire against Worcestershire in the LV County Championship. Metters, the former Exmouth cricketer and Exeter City Academy scholar, took six wickets for 65 runs on his First Class bow as Worcestershire were bowled out for 228 in their first innings last week. They were the best figures ever posted by any Warwickshire bowler on his First Class debut. Warwickshire went on to win by 218 runs and had victory almost in the bag before the 20-year-old left-armer got on to bowl again. And with 27 not out in Warwickshire's first innings, to add to his wickets, it was a debut performance to savour. Ashley Giles, the former England spinner and Ashes winner in charge of cricket at Warwickshire, thinks Metters is a cool customer with the right attitude to First Class cricket. "We are very impressed with him – his temperament is fantastic," Giles said. "We have not known him for long, but in the short space of time he has been here he struck me how cool he is and that he just gets on with things. "He's very similar to Neil Smith, someone I played a lot of cricket with. "He's very calm, almost an ice man in the way that he doesn't get flustered and just gets on with things." Giles himself knows a thing or two about spin bowling, having taken 143 wickets in his 43 Test matches and a First Class total of 539 costing less than 30 apiece. And he has been impressed with Metters' approach. "It's early days for him. He's got a lot to learn and he's still learning about spin bowling," Giles said. "But he has got a lot of the elements you are looking for. He spins it, he looks quite economical and simple, he drops the ball quite quickly and he learns quickly. "He doesn't seem to get flustered. He's got a quicker ball and good variations of pace, which probably comes from having bowled seamers. "All that together makes him interesting. He worked on a new run-up last week and this was the first game that he really tried it in. He was walking in and he was losing a bit of rhythm doing that. "Now he's trotting in. He got a bit tight on the front foot and he was no balled a couple of times. "It worries you that it might put him off, but he settled in quickly and it's nice to see a youngster come in and do so well on his debut. "He's learning his trade so hopefully I can help him with the tacticals and technicals." Edited by flipper - 18 May 2011 at 11:12am |

Graham Napier and Chris Wright just put on 190 for the 9th wicket for Essex against Surrey - Wright made 34 of them! Napier is having one of his on days and has hit 16 sixes so far in 196 off 129 balls. I guess he'll start hitting out now the No 11 is in

Talk about a jinx - out to the next ball he faced!
Meanwhile Bopara and Morgan are in what the press are dubbing a straight shoot out for the No 6 slot in the Test team during the Lions match with SL. Bopara has already missed out, having gone in at 3. As I mentioned earlier in the thread, someone had to bat out of position to open the innings since they only picked one opener, and as is the way of things, it was the youngest man, James Taylor, who got lumbered, but to his credit he is scrapping away and is currently 46*. This Lankan bowling attack looks pretty depleted. They will have a hard long tour methinks.
Clobs - whom would you favor for the number 6 slot? I'd personally go with Morgan

Bopara for my money since he has stayed at home and found form in the First Class game while Morgan opted to boost his bank account instead.
