First of all, I would recommend four-day Tests. I would try to increase the over-rate, because people want to pack more into life, and I would play day-night Tests. Kerry Packer tried it in 1977-78 and '78-79. He had a few Tests that were played at night and they got good crowds. I think it is time the administrators did something about this.

India is one of the places to try it [day-night Tests] because their board is forward-looking. It can do whatever it wants: it is wealthy and powerful and it can get crowds in at night. I think they should start playing Tests from 2pm till 10pm.

 
That's boycott answer to a question of how you could bring back crowds nto test matches. What's you all views on this idea?

Day not tests - i don't hope so. Toss will than have a key effect then.

Because people mostly work during the day. The crowd will get bigger round the evening/night time which can spice up the atmosphere of the game and make for a better game. No joke here, a crowd can have an impact on the sides performance.

Test cricket is alive and well in most parts of the world. Just look at the Sri Lanka V England series. I do agree with it beginning in India as the nature of the pitches over there make for a batsman's paradise one series after another.

I have to say as a fan, going to watch a test match under lights would be an exciting experience but I prefer 5 days as it is! Batting under lights gets ridiculously tough in some countries and it might just make some of the games more one sided plus the dew factor.
 
I don't think 5 day test are boring but yeah, the crowd seems to be less today but that's more down to poor cricket of late from some nations and the tracks in some places make for dull cricket.

I don't think it's that long mate. It's under a 100 years I think because I'm sure I once read that George Headley played in an unlimited time test match and he was around like the 30's.

 Originally test matches were two and three day affairs. Gradually with the pitches being better prepared , matches stretched to 5 days.  Then some bright (!) spark had the idea of resolving test series by making the last test "timeless".
     It was an unmitigated disaster - scoring was unbelievably slow (and this in the days when 2 runs per over was deemed satisfactory) and matches lasted8 days or so.  The 1938 timeless test in Durban between England and SA was such a match and it ended in a draw!!  8 days of tedium and then England had to leave for Cape Town and their boat home.    It spelt the beginning of the end for such dreary encounters.

Surely if you reduce to 4 days you are just going to increase the occurence of drawn matches?

I'm not sure about elsewhere but certainly over here test matches are still sometimes hard to get tickets for as are often sell out events, so why try and change things unnessicarily?

 If they start earlier and bowl more overs , then 4 day matches could be fine Homer. Fact is quite a lot of matches end within 4 days already.  I've no problem with that format , but I cannot see how test matches can be played as day/nighters.
      Sir Geoffrey has lost the plot on this one.

The Aussies seem to be up for it though, seems that if you start late afternoon fewer Aussies are beering it up on the beach and, therefore, more likely to beer it up at a cricket match - you pays yer money, you takes yer choice.
When you win the toss - bat.
If you are in doubt, think about it - then bat. If you have very big doubts, consult a colleague - then bat.

 I still have concerns over using a white ball for test matches 143. It is changed after 34 overs in the 50 over format , will they give a new ball every 40 overs in a day/night test ?  If so then the batsmen do the hard work and get ready to plunder some deserved rewards when the umpire throws the bowler a new ball! 
          If they do change the ball every 40 overs , just what'll happen to spin bowlers ???  Maybe that's Australia's plan - they haven't got any decent tweakers anymore and want to limit the sides that have !

I've just read an article on the BBC website with quotes from Ricky Ponting. He's dead set against changing the format of test cricket. Apparently Australia had some of their domestic competition played as day/nighters at the WACA and the Gabba some time ago.  He said that whilst he didn't play in the trials he said the general consensus among batsmen was it was a nightmare batting at night.
         A few posers to anyone who saw these matches , as I have no recollection of them at all - 
    
        1) Did they use a white ball and how often was it changed ?
        2)  Were the attendances higher than those for normal day matches?
       
    The 2nd question has relevance as CA believe they'll get 4 times the audience for D/N affairs.

i supose day-nite tests would be good for tourist fans back at home bexause you could set it so that the time is reasonable for both countries, not like at the moment where i have to get uo at 4am to listen to  eng v sri lanka test.
 
other than that i think its good because it adds another relm of variation to cricket. however i do not agree with the 4 day threory put forward because
a. there would be alot more draws ( which is just boring)
b. we would get to watch as much cricket
c. the run rate would incread to 4.5 - 5 per over, almost ODI run rate, which could ruin test cricket all together
d. alot more spinners would be brought in to test teams simpily because they get through there over more quickly, which is completly absurd.
e. weather and other conditions (bad light) could have a bigger impact on a test, e.g if it rains for 1 day in a 5 day test match it only effects 20% of the match, if it rained for 1 day in a 4 day game it could effect 25% of the game. 5% may not seem like much but it could be as much as 25 overs which could win or loose u a test match

Wont the people be going to work the next day? You expect the people to get back from work straight to the stadium and go back to work th very next day??? It is just not practical.

I don't agree with a 4day/night test match. 4 days = more draws. Night means that the team batting during the day will get an advantage than teams batting in the night(ie dew). Therefore it would not be an even contest (as happens in day/night ODI)
