hi guys, im now working in South Africa at a school for part of my gap year, recently whilst umpiring a school game, a lad hit the ball and it landed on the rope, is this a 6 or a 4?
i thought it was a 4, but the other ump signalled 6, i thought it was 4 becuase i wathced a game a few years back where New Zealand needed 6 off the last ball, and the guy hit it over fine leg, and it landed on the rope and was classed as a 4!
any help appreciated!
thanks guys

I was at an FC game last season where it happened and it's definitely 6 as Chin Music says

And I think by 4 you mean for, not four. If the ball touches the rope as it lands on the ground, it is a definate six and this is what being practised these days.

If it touches any part the rope before touching the ground it's a six, because touching the rope counts as clearing the rope, which is why when the ball rolls against it and doesn't cross it's a four

'tis indeed a six - though there was an interesting happening in the recent VB series. In one match the ball hit the advertising triangle section around the boundary and was called 4, in another game the same happened and was called 6. Turned out in the first game the triangle section was placed in front of the boundary rope whilst in the second the rope went through the centre of the triangular section. Begs the question "why do it like that?" for the first game!!

When you win the toss - bat.
If you are in doubt, think about it - then bat. If you have very big doubts, consult a colleague - then bat. |

does anyone know when the rule got changed when you could catch a ball outside the boundary? I have heard of Steve Waugh taking a catch round the sightscreen but I'm not sure about it. Does anyone know?

That's six as well because you'd be over the boundary rope.

I dunno what is so difficult i;m not saying u have to get it right or umpires should know every rule in the book, but obviously it is a bit of a geryspot and needs to be cleared up by the icc or whoever is in charge. The book can only say 1 thing.
