Hi, I think that "On their day" is an expression used an awful lot in cricket discussion. "On his day he could make it in to any team" and so on. So I have decided to make a thread asking everyone who On his day is the best batsman and bowler. Basically, if you dont understand me, I am asking who is the best inconsistent batsman and bowler. the bowler who when he gets it right, takes loads of wickets and the batsman who just cant get out when he's on form.

Best batsman= Brian Lara because on a flat pitch, he just scores and scores and scores. This is proven from countless massive scores he has posted.

Best Bowler= Steve Harmison, simply because of some wonderful bowling performances on some days like 7/12 and 6/19 and even his five for at Lords in 2005. He is impossible to play when in form and on a bouncy pitch.

Your thoughts?

On his day, I would prefer Lee, Bond or Ahktar than Harmison. he scares me quite alot.

On his day I think Hayden intimidates me more than any other due to his sheer size and power.
Judge the player not by their stats, but by their opposition.

Anyone on their day is more than a handful! On my day, the English won't make 10 runs against me!!! Dead

On his day Akthar will be the most intimidatating bowler. Abdur Razzaq and Ahahid Afridi will scare off any bowler on their day. The title should go to Pakistani's as they are Mr. Unpredictables.

Surely anyone would be great 'on their day?'

Michael Clarke was great 'on his day' when he took 6/9,  but he hardly bowls in tests so you couldn't really say whether he was consistent or not.

On his day Shaun Tait can be a handful when he gets it to come out alright.
"His classical hits down the ground, met with a checked drive, were Tendulkar at his best. It was though he had a new lease of life." - Sachin Tendulkar's return to cricket with a 91-Ball century.

Kevin Pietersen can be unbelievable on his day. When England were chasing down 272 in the Champions Trophy at India, England were struggling on 180-5 with 12 overs left. Pietersen was in and began steadily ensuring he wouldn't lose his wicket, and went to 30 from 54 balls, then when England really needed him too he went into superslog mode and scored his last 60 runs from 32 balls, and ended up on 90 from 86 balls as England won by 3 wickets.
On extended leave...

On his day; Shahid Afridi is the best all-round in world cricket, quiet simply. It's just his day comes once in a blue moon these days.

You state that you're talking of the best inconsistent batsman and bowler and then go for Brian Lara!  Lara's record is remarkable , I'd hardly call him inconsistent lad.  Harmison bowled like a wally in Oz last time out , so I'll give you some latitude there , although he has consistently taken wickets since arriving on the test scene.

One that springs to my mind is Damien Martyn. Fantastic "on his day" but unfortunately it was few and far between. A very inconsistent batsmen with remarkable timing but when he was off, he was OFF!

Inconsistant= afridi, akthar, watson & so on, and although I was never a huge fan, martyn is not in that group.
Monkey see, Monkey do.

I have to agree that he is not in that group. Although they have already been mentioned so i thought i would throw in someone who no one had said yet. As i mentioned previously, on his day he was terrific, but when he wasnt he looked ordinary.

Only two years ago Martyn was the most consistent batsman in the Australian side , all those tons told their own story. As an Englishman I can tell you I was always relieved when he was on his way back to the pavillion.

Yep. didn't do too much before or since. He was in a purple patch for a season and a bit but as an Australian, i still believe he was inconsistent. He proved that too many times by walking back to the pavillion very cheaply.....

Sledge is right though. Most of the names coming up here are renowned for their consistency. They have plenty of "days".

If inconsistency is the name of the game, then my "on their day" vote would be for Afridi or Boucher (although even Boucher is finding a degree of form these days).

On the bowling side, probably Fidel Edwards.
