Yeah, your reaction time has to be very quick otherwise you'll be seeing stars. The only beamers that scare me are the ones coming head height and to the balls. Other than that, I'm fine. The other day, I hit a fast bowler ball over waist height for six over extra cover.

Beamers are very dangerous things...the sight of a cricket ball hurtling towards your head at speed - frightening. My mate used to bowl to me in the nets and if the ball was wet it slipped pretty badly. Maybe the surface that the Flicx is laid on made the ball jump. Im an opening bat so I always wear a helmet in games but I have now also started wearing them at practice since it better simulates the field of vision I would have during a match. 

The Flicx mat we use can be a little unpredictable.  One of our middle-order bats was getting ready to drive a good length ball a few days ago, it shot up and hit him in the shoulder.  He never wears a helmet, which I personally think is a bit silly on this pitch.

Well where I play the ball tends to keep pretty low so the chances ofgetting hit in the head are pretty low unless the other team has a 7ftbowler. Only a few times has the ball gotten to head height when i'vebeen at nets and the few times it has I've played it competantly.

Anyway i'd go by the argument that anyone who doesnt wear a helmet isprobably silly enough that there isn't much in there to damage but Ilike the Sachin Tendulkar quote of "it gives you more reason to hit theball" and while I dont claim to be a millionth of the batsman he is hehas a point. if you dont have a helmet on (or maybe if you do I dontknow) and the ball is heading for your face then your body plays theshot for you, which gives some interesting results and are often goodshots.

I've never been a fan of helmets just because they tend to give you abad field of vision, if they ever design one with a perspex panel onthe front then maybe but until then i'll keep trying my method of duckand hit until I take one in the face.

Thats a bit like shutting the gate after the horse has bolted. I have a few mates that started wearing helmets after they they were hit. I don't always wear one in a game, but I always do at training, bowlers always seem to try a bit harder trying to impress the skipper.

I've been hit by both fast bowlers and bowling machines, maybe I justhave good pain tolerance, it bruises a little but it doesnt do anyserious damage. Maybe one day I'll take a ball somewhere that does hurtme quite a bit, like the head. I personally dont wear much protection, just pads, gloves and box, Ialways felt that it gives me more reason to hit the ball, where thereare people with thigh guards and chest protectors, armguards and allthe rest, each to their own I suppose.

Maybe I'm strange but the feeling of getting hit in the body by acricket ball isn't pain as such, just feels dull, and reminds me that iscrewed up and missed one.

it was only a soft ball so it didn't do any serious damage which is morethen can be said for a crafty little leg break i threw in that hit himwhere you wouldnt wish to be hit while not wearing a box...
