Author: Ropper
Subject: Need advice for my leg spin grip
Posted: 29 January 2013 at 11:55pm

I use a complete opposite grip & wrist delivery than Shane Warne & Terry Jenner. I have always bowled their way and have learned to be like them as its all the information you can get on leg spin bowling (and rightly so it is so successful). I found bowling this way I could only produce a big bouncing top spinner. My bowling is very accurate but I struggled to get a standard leg break. I persisted & persisted with the Warney style but it just wasn't a natural delivery style for me. So I began to experiment, it has taken me 5 years of experimenting but I believe I have found a regular big turning leg break. While experimenting I also produced a slightly different style flipper. I call my leg break UNORTHODOX legspin as it is different to the standard. It's huge turning with better natural variation and quite simple to learn, and my accuracy has improved even more. It really works with my action and I will be using it full time this season so I can justify results. I used it once last season and took 5-32 off 8 overs in the second last game of the season. It felt a little scary using it in a game because I hadn't fully developed it with a consistent action. So I shelved it until after the season as we were in the finals, now I'm ready to use it fully as I have the consistent action it feels comfortable. Once I get through the season I plan on producing a you tube video to fully explain the unorthodox leg spin style and hopefully give people option who struggle with the standard leg break. Cheers! & stay tuned.

Your upper half is to stay loose. There are some great baseball/softball and now they have cricket training equipment that teaches proper technical muscle memory and builds the right power muscles. I think you might like this. I like to put fielders in the above positions but obviously when a batter is set you need some guys on the fence. If set even with everyone on the fence generally a good batsman will find the gaps or clear the boundary anyway. Even though its 20/20 if you can hold your nerve & have accurate bowlers in your side, keep your fielders in & go for wickets instead of playing too defensive.

It is a very interesting question and I must say that when the timing is out it is hard to find what is your trigger to get it back. One drill that has helped me was to just trying to stay as dead still as possible for as long as possible. Even for longer than the time you think you have. This helped me to focus on watching the ball and to realise how much time there is!!
Do you think that is a good drill?

Cheers
