help with fast bowling : Dear Samir, As a former medium...

    Author: Alieaz
Subject: 1195
Posted: 23 March 2009 at 7:05pm

Dear Samir,

As a former medium pacer turned to a somewhat respectable medium-fast seamer I share your frustration in finding that elusive pace. The first thing you need to remember is that your physique, if underdeveloped, will limit how much you can progress.

You need very strong legs for load bearing (weights and plyometrics), a taught core for balance, a flexible back (pilates at home is good for most of this!) and fast - not big arms. Look at Brett Lee as a model of physique and you will notice these attributes. Particularly the last point, for your arms it is advisable you use a lower weight and do faster reps to train the right muscle fibres (fast twitch). Always consult a qualified gym instructo and your doctor before proceeding. If you're already on a programme, great!

Once you've established the strength its important to stay supple and relaxed. Pilates and yoga and good ole fashioned stretching before you train are advisable.

As far as biomechanics are concerned I find three things help me get the most out of my bowling:

An upright posture with the weight slightly forward and the head dead straight at the target (this is where the head must be until after the follow through).

Leading with the chest and hips during the delivery stride. Its as if you are being pulled from your stomanch. This creates a boomering shape to the body and increases the leverage of your bowling arm giving it snap.

Finally, shoulder rotation. It starts with your non bowling arm. I lead with my elbow and drive it down to my side which brings my hips into line with the batsmen without dropping my posture or collapsing my left shoulder (this should make it easier to brace the leg) and then the bowling arm comes over naturally and easily and with speed. Continue the movement by imaging you are driving the shoulder into the ground and show the batsmen the number on your back and finish with your right leg driving up and outwards to bring your right side completely over towards the batsmen.

(this for a right handed bowler)

Hope this helps all the best with the pace Samir

Admittedly i thought i was bowling 70mph i got myslf speed gunned it was 55mph at the batsman so probably 60 out of the hand which is quite slow when compared to internationals but considering im am 15 years of age its reasonable. But i know i can get wickets from my extra bounce and swing. In the words of Glen Mcgrath the greatest seam bowler "speed is overated"

Edited by revolutions - 05 March 2008 at 5:23pm

I know it's not 160 but that's still very fast! Taylor is slower these days because of injury to his back in the past and having to remodel his action but he is still consistently around 87 mph these days.

I'm a bit faster than some of the others on the team, but a bit slower than the top two bowlers, one of whom is seriously quick for our level. I'd rate myself about joint 3rd fastest on the team. My spin bowling is terrible, not because I can't get the ball to turn (I can bowl a bit of leg or offspin), but because I can't get it to land where I want it to. I'll stick to being a medium pacer, thanks.
