If that's theBCCI's thinking , then they have little confidence in their own seamersand fear the South African attack.
We all agree it's a negative attitude and I'd love to know Gary Kirsten's thoughts.
The one positive from a South Africanperspective is that the Indian bowlers had to bowl twice in the 1sttest. Even Sehwag , after his heroics with the bat , bowled 22 overs inthe SA 2nd innings. That possible tiredness might well have someimpact come Thursday. Mystery is right too , an extrabowler, if conditions (track and climatic) are similar would reduce thestrain on their attack.

Edited by Sledger - 01 April 2008 at 6:50am

He has the potential to develop into a deadly bowler but for that he should avoid injuries. He will be cannon fodder though if BCCI keep producing these flat tracks as his pace and bounce will just get the ball to sit up nicely for the batsman. His pace will help the ball come easily onto the bat and he will struggle as I don't believe that he is line and length. In australia he was negating that by his bounce which he won't get in India, and by his inswing which I again doubt will happen to that much extent or even happen if these type of pitches are made.

If you look at recent wins India have had, these are in good bowling conditions. India have more than competent batsman to negate the effect of good bowling pitch and put up a good total and Indian bowlers can be deadly on swinging or bouncy tracks. I still don't get the reason as to why BCCI are acting like idiots producing flattest of pitches. It has been seen that many Indian batsman actually like bounce as Tendulkar and Laxman are very good when wicket has bounce as can be seen from their records in Australia. Even Rohit Sharma likes bounce and I am sure he will be found at home like Laxman. India's best chance, I believe lies in unleashing their pace bowlers on bowler friendly pitches. They have the variety in their attack which they should try to use which on flat is of no use. I watched each and every test in Oz but I'm certainly not watching any test in this series because of the boring cricket.

The indian side has the batsmen to deal with a pitch that has a bit of juice in it and it now has the bowlers to make good use of it.
Ishant Sharma has shown that he can bowl well at the top team in Test Cricket. He can swing the ball, gets good bounce and causes many problems to batsmen. I reckon he'll learn to make the ball move off the seam more if he gets better pitches to bowl on at home.

India also have Zaheer Khan, Sreesanth, R.P Singh and Irfan Pathan who would all also benefit from more active pitches. Now if they wanted to go with 3 seamers and 2 spinners then Pathan gives them that option with the all rounder role. Kumble and Harbhajan can bat competently as can Ishant.

That would give them the chance to use better pitches to their own advantage. I guess it'll take until their away record is better than their home one before they start doing it.

If I was Kirsten I'd be absolutely fuming that they won't give him pitches with more juice in them. If they're scared of Steyn and company ripping through them if they do then they shouldn't be in any position to make decisions on the pitch.

India have arguably the strongest batting lineup in the world and should be able to put up a fight against good seamers on active tracks.

India don't have any excuse to play on tracks like this one in the past test.

I'm sure they can produce a pitch which has some grass on and will crack to provide assistance for the spinners on days 4 and 5.

Or even a pitch that has more pace and bounce in it so that if the seamers put a bit of work in they'll reap rewards from the surface.

Until they do then I fear that Ishant will suffer for it.

The only problem for me is that the test matches in India are mostly on dead tracks like the one against south africa, and this wont help Ishant at all, i think its about time the indians had faith in their pace bowlers and stop making dead tracks, because the cricket becomes boring and it wont help the upcoming pace bowlers. I'd like to see Ishant play in county cricket for a bit here, im sure it will do him a world of good playing in England.
