Of recent times (because nobody can remember too far back), it ispretty obvious that langer/hayden and gibbs/kirsten partnerships werethe best by a mile. Its hard to say which is better because they bothhave opening partnership averages of about 50. I'd reckon that Herbert Sutcliffe and Jack Hobbs would be the opening batsmen in most Englishmens dream Test eleven* and I couldn't believe they weren't included in the poll. Interesting that Hayden and Langer are fast closing up on the record of 16 centuries (Greenidge and Haynes.)

*save for those who'd have Hobbs opening with Hutton.

greenidge and haynes were the best opening pair ever! not just because of the # of partnerships they put together, but in the manner they did... dominated at most times, and during an era which was the richest in terms of quality of bowling...

all successful pairs of the last 5-10 years stand no where close to them... the bowling has deteriorated all over (most good bowlers have retired... + McWarne are in their dusk); and todays pitches are batsmen friendly...

so lets not even compare them! they were a altogether superior class and in a superior era!

Smith - AB Dvilliars have about 90 opening partnership is short time

Smith - Gibbs who opened for more than 26 tests avg about 68 runs

while Langer and Hayden avg about 48 runs in 55 odd test matches

Haynes - Greenidge who played for about 85 tests avg about 46 runs

Hayden and Langer are the Best Today and are one of, if not the best ever..

In my eyes though Greenidge and Haynes (West Indies) were the best ever... they slaughtered so many attacks around the world... and for so long
