I had this problem for a while, although I wouldn't back away, I would flail my head to the side and just hold the bat out to try and make contact with the ball, while jumping in the air! I used to do this for any ball that was rising quickly above waist level. Practice against fast bowlers helped me though.

It hurts, and will stingfor a while but is unlikly to do any serious damage and you wont haveany problems in the future, I used to be pretty worried when someonewith pace came in at me, I wouldnt get my front foot forward and i'dshy away from the ball. I worked on this mentally for a while, workingout that the ball isn't going to do any serious harm despite the fact Ionly wear pads, box and gloves.

The other day I was rewarded for this while practicing, one of the pacelads, a fast one at that asked if he could just bowl flat out at me fora while and it was really fun, hit some amazing shots, I did get hit afew times, it stung, I got over it.

If your really worried then pad up, get a thigh guard, an arm guard, achest guard and a helmet on. Should improve your playing against fasterbowlers and you will realise that if your positive then you use yourbat to hit the ball and its fairly rare that you get hit yourself.

Anyway good luck with it and let us know how you get along.

Edited by Kerm - 16 April 2007 at 11:49am
