Infact try to generate an extra yard of pace.
A knee high full toss fired at great pace is very difficult to hit. Any mistimed hit can also give you a wicket. Also makes the batsman wary that you might bowl the next one down his throat (Lee on Tendulkar). Also mix your yorkers with bouncers.

As a pace bowler, you should be the one dominating the batsman. Aggression is an essential trait for a quick. So next time, dont think of just stopping runs, think of stopping the batsman himself. Runs will stop automatically.
If you can't land a ball in the area like Mcgrath, Pollock, Asif, Bracken etc, you definitely need pace. Practice at your full pace and you'll get better. Don't practice to get accuracy at a slow pace then try to bowl accurately at a fast pace - you'll just be wasting up training sessions!!

Mix up your deliveries, slip in some slower balls, a faster ball, vary your length so the batsmen doesn't know where the ball is going. That should get you through if your having a bad day. And like the previous poster said, practice! If you don't practice it you cant expect it to work in games.

edit: You really answered your own question though, you said you were getting hit because of your pace, so the obvious thing to do is slow it down a bit, let the batsmen be forced into creating the pace of the ball himself.

Edited by NZ_Fast - 30 September 2007 at 6:13am
