Author: Chin Music
Subject: 3520
Posted: 19 April 2007 at 12:30pm

I seem to remember writing quite a lot on a this subject in another thread once before, so I'll just copy and paste what I wrote then:

The one key thing for swing bowling which is almost never mentioned butcan make a bigger difference than probably any other single thing iswrist position. For a start, if your going to bowl swing your wrist hasto be firm and cocked, and it has to stay firm throughout the delivary, that is the first thing to get right. Once you've sorted that (and takeyour time making sure you've got it, get experienced players to watchyou closely and comment) you can move on to wrist position for the in-and/or out-swinger.

Youwill frequently hear people when talking about swing refering to whereyou point the seam - at first slip for an away-swinger and at leg slipfor an in-swinger. This is correct to an extent, but crucially doesn'ttell the whole story. What people get wrong is to rotate the angle ofthe ball in the hand to achieve this but in fact what you need to do isto hold the ball as normal and change your wrist position - slightly tothe left for an away-swinger, so the seam appears at a slight anglelike so (/) and vice versa for the in-swinger so the ball appears (\).BUT it is crucial you always keep your wrist firmly cocked or youwon't be getting the benefit, plus you'll be losing pace, accuracy, anyseam movement basically everything that makes a seam bowler useful. Mypoint being that wrist position is absolutely crucial in all seambowling.

Anyway, these technical things aside, if you keeptrying it's likely if you have a decent action you'll discover younaturally swing the ball one way, so when you do work on that one andmake it your stock ball, you can always work on the other one later ifneeds be. I've bowled lovely away-swingers since i was a wee nipperwithout knowing how, having never been told about what affect the wristhas, and now for the first time in my life i can bowl one which goestrhe other way, which is a great weapon in a bowlers armoury.Concentrate on your natural swing though ,and keep that as a surprise.
