Unfortunately for Hodge, he was not actually competing with Watson for a place.  He was competing with Clark and Hussey and he was never going to displace them.
 
Watson's place was assured as Australia like 4 quicks because of the powerplays.

He has actually surprised me too in this tournament. I was certainly expecting him to perform poorly (as per usual) but i noticed today that no one has dismissed throughout the tournament. I know that he is batting down the order but he has failed in that spot many times before. His bowling is still poor though. You're right he shouldn't be picked ahead of Hodge. As a Victorian the treatment of Hodge infuriates me but it's just the way it is. In comparison to the rest of the Aussie side, he doesnt cut the mustard. His batting has improved in this tournament but he has been in the side for more than 4 years after a placid stint in first class, why is he in the side? How much longer do we have to wait to see if he will become a good all rounder? His bowling is medioca at best. He cant be picked in this side for either batting or bowling alone so he just shouldnt be....
 
         Brad Hodge should be picked ahead of him hands down. An excellent batsman who can bowl a bit. Fantastic first class career and he has proved himself time and time again (Dropped after scoring 201* against SA, 128*(91) in this world cup to make way for Watson). Dont forget, Watson was picked ahead of Michael Clarke and Andrew Symonds for the ashes but he got injured. There is no logic to his selection.
 
         He hasnt done anything for years and having injuries is just bad luck. As soon he is declared fit, he is shoe in????? I just dont get it....Anyway, i have already said my thoughts on Watson. Go you Aussies!

How about we lay off Watson a bit? He has been ruined by injuries pretty much his whole career. Yeah his bowling hasn't been great but his batting and hitting has been more than impressive and has surprised, even amazed me in this WC. Keep in mind that he is not batting in a role that really suits his game, he has made very handy runs in just about every game he has played at a strike rate somewhere around 180 runs per 100 balls. I'd consider that 'adequate' to say the least. I also remember him throwing down the timber with one stump to aim at from the boundary against SAF when Australia were in quite a bit of trouble with the ball.

The Aussies are just incredible.  This is the first time I've seen a side dominate like this since I started watching cricket.  My dad used to talk to me about the South African side of the early 70s....just before they were banned and then the mighty windies.  The Australian side of the last 10 years will be talked about in the same fashion for years to come. 
 
Although it is a joy to watch cricket played with such quality, there is always a danger that it could kill the game if the aussies demolish all that come before them like they did the Proteas.  There is no doubt that the Aussies deserve to lift the wc this time around too.  However, imo, it would be better for cricket if SL won.

I thought the guys would have murdered the **** out of the Aussies but when I watched, the guys were horrible except Sangakkara and Vettori in the ODI's. Freddie bowled well in the tests but all the batters except Sehwag failed.

The politics and selections policies do hurt SA, but it's no excuse for such a poor performance. All that talk about being calm and relaxed before the game was tripe. The top order were like chickens in a tornado.

 143 the cricket culture in Australia is the key to the nationalteam's success. It strikes me that nobody slips the net - if you havetalent and the drive , you'll get every encouragement to succeed. 
    Attitude is vital too and Australians have it inspades. I see no problem with someone spouting off if they do thebusiness. Some call that arrogance , I call it confidence.
     Ponting and company expect to lift thatTrophy on Saturday. They won't treat Sri Lanka lightly , but they're aunit that backs one another completely and they know if only 6 or 7 dothe business in the final , that will be enough.

    The bar has been lifted yet again and it's up to therest to work even harder if they want success at the highest level.

You would think he might have learned by now, he was embaressed here a few years ago by trying to talk it up, and he has kept going, all the talk in the world won't help if you don't believe it yourself. And well said sledger, I would like to see all these aussie bashers focus on their country improving, rather than hoping for a bad day from aust and trying to just get lucky. I agree about Smith. Very talented batsmen but I think his team would perform better if he just shut up and worried about winning games, getting his team and captaincy right and gaining momentum rather than baiting teams like Australia whom SAF have always had trouble beating and generally acting like a complete ****er. I'm not sure SAF will succeed with him as captain.

 How dire were South Africa ?  Smith's mouth pressuries theentire side - all that talk of "brave cricket" is pure drivel . There are basics in one day cricket which the South Africans simplydisregarded. Respect the new , swinging ball and play the situation infront of you.
      A score of 250 would have beencompetitive (although unlikely to have been enough with such a onedimensional attack) , but they had grand aspirations of blowingAustralia away - just how stupid was that?

      Smith , Kallis , Prince , Pollock andHall gifted their wickets and proved what Steve Waugh said all thoseyears ago - South Africa are chokers.

     They can't live on that 438 game forever (remember how they bowled in that match?) and finally realise that they are boys trying to beat a team of men.

      Australia played as we knew they would ,so why didn't their opposition have aviable gameplan - the answer israther simple , brainless cricketers with no bottle.

        Sri Lanka are up against it. Australia lovebig matches and will be aching to get out there for the final - theyknow they're good , they also know their limitations and play withinthemselves. That is confidence and I just cannot see them losing.

        For all our sakes (even youAussies!) let's hope they get a game on Saturday and we have somethingto take from this weary affair. 
        To all Aussies , heartycongratulations , you have a team to be rightly proud of. To a man ,they've all performed ('cept maybe Watson!) and played withintelligence and verve - simply put , they are far , far too good foranything that they've come up against in the last 7 weeks or so.

      So Sri Lanka , prove me wrong and makethe best team on the planet really have to prove it on Saturday.
