I totally agree that Afridi is amazing when in touch but can also be very disappointing. One thing i noticed with the statistics given, Afridi also batted alot more in his first 23 tests so that could be one explanation for him scoring more runs and more 50's.
5 more than Ponting, 10 more than Gilly, 3 more than Hayden, 11 more than Clarke, 7 more than Sachin, 5 more than Rahul and 4 more than Lara. I dont believe he belongs in the same class below yet but he is certainly headed in the right direction! Fantastic player to watch!!!
Player Mat I NO Runs HS Ave 100 50
Afridi 23 42 1 1620 156 39.51 5 8 Ponting 23 37 2 1335 127 38.14 3 7 Gillchrist 23 32 4 1472 152 52.57 4 9 Hayden 23 39 2 1559 203 42.13 4 6 Clarke 20 31 2 1072 151 36.96 2 4 Tendulkar 23 35 3 1382 165 43.18 5 6 Dravid 23 37 3 1805 148 53.08 2 15 Lara 23 38 0 2180 375 57.36 4 12 |

First, Afridi is definitely a good batsman but not great. On his day, you could be forgiven for thinking that hes the best in the world but a keen eye would be able to see that his technique is below average. However, he does do the job for Pakistan often which is why he is still around.
His test record as posted in this thread is quite impressive. It will be very difficult for him to improve his technique now as he has been around for too long and is past the moulding stage. It is not impossible though and if he improves his technique, his average might stay high. The biggest problem I have with Afridi though is his temperament. I have seen him blaze away to 30 or 40 and then give his wicket away trying to play a ridiculous shot. Agreed that he has done his job to some extent by providing a quick start but whats the harm in trying to stay in a little more than he does. However, I do not think he can help it. He plays the way he plays and he thinks the way he thinks....like it or lump it and hes been in international cricket for so long by being Shahid Afridi so hats off to him.
On a side note, earlier in this thread someone alluded that if you manipulate facts, stats etc., then you must be Indian. I do not think that such ridiculous generalizations are necessary and take offense to the above mentioned statement. Edited by scuudz - 13 March 2007 at 10:39pm |

you cant compare these records as afridi has had many more innings than alot of these blokes and looking at their averages they would have overtaken him with ease...

Agreed while his strike rate is a phonemenal 109. Also Afridi has played those tests by the age of 26 when he should be at his peak. THe othrs played those matches by age 23 or something oh yeah! compare it to Bradman, and he gets whipped more than cream. |

CC you seem to have a lot of difficulty understanding many posters
here - there might be the odd typo , but they're easy to follow if you
read them twice.

Yes i was the vice captain of the club for good 4 years. We had many better players than Afridi of that time. And if you think Afridi is among 11 or 16 most talentd players in the country, then you are badly mistaken my friend

There are reasons for that. Most players get wasted at an early age due to corruption in the system.
Yet another vital reason is that we grow up playing tape call cricket. Therefore, more often than not our batsmen tend to bat that way. As tape call cricket lasts for 6-8 overs max!!! Everybody loves to whack the ball out of the park and no obdoy wants or tries to play with the straight bat. We play on cement pitches and it is an entirely different experience when we play on the turf

you are right. But i beleave that Pakistan could have prepared so many openers in the last 6 years. I cant see any Batsmen in 3 years or so when Yousuf and Younus will retire.

Yousuf is a diferent class. Such batsmen dont come that often anyhow. We will have plenty like younus. Asim Kamal, Khurram Manzoor, Khalid Latif, Hasan and many others are there to take the spot. But there are an good openers still

afridi played with so many guys and not me alone, but none other made the national team. It depends largely on luck and at times on your connections with the cricket authorities here in pakistan. And it was not only afridi, i have played alongside Hasan Raza and Shadab Kabir as well. Playing alongside an international cricketer doesnt guarantee you a place in the national side

so you mean to say that all the players in your side were better than afridi. It would surely be a very good side then and extremely bad luck must have accompanied you guys.

We were a fine side and most of the guys were better conventional cricketrers as compared to afridi. Afridi is not conventional, there is something exceptional about him and lady luck favored him too.
And i dont really rate afridi that high anyways

Well my dear friends, first of all does Afridi play cricket? I belive he plays Tennis with a cricket bat. No other listed by you people(Kemp, Pietersen, Sachin.........) do this way. Even Dhoni comes near to Afridi in playing Tennis but he is far ahead of Afridi with his concentration levels.

He may not be necessarily the most technically correct batsman but he still plays proper shots.
And dear lad Dhoni plays much better shots than Afridi. He is not a slogger like Afridi. He builds his innings. |
