He was a great matchwinner mate. Often Barlow would make what seemed like suicidal declarations to push for the win. His secret weapon was Hobson who always bowled into the south easterly wind - this helped give outrageous dip , which coupled to viscous turn made him practically unplayable.
More's the pity that whilst the south-easter still blows , the pitch just doesn't have the bounce or grip of yesteryear.   Having said that though , he'd still be a real handful.

Returning to my selected XI. If that's a test team then there could well be reason to bring in Brian McMillan over Adrian Kuiper. Not if we're talking one day cricket though!

I'm getting senile - I left out Harry Pilling , he played for Lancashire for about 40 years !!

And Ken Higgs !   Confused    Picking just XI is a might tricky.

Must be, otherwise my Somerset team would be Sunil Gavaskar, Graeme Smith, Ricky Ponting,  Sanath Jayasuriya, Viv Richards, Martin Crowe, Justin Langer (wk), Bill Alley, Ian Botham, Joel Garner, and Andy caddi£k!

Make them play on a karachi pitch and keep bowling for 5 days!! I assume Lancs team will also be quite strong by this method

You can supplement him with all your cricket-playing brothers and cousins - that should give you some sort of team.

Yes JP, one time I played a fete match and everyone on the team was related either by blood or marriage.  I was related to everyone though!

Last time Justin kept wicket was in the early 90s. I'd rather choose a specialist and have a real keeper there then have someone who is capable of it, but not the best. Then again I can't think of any Somerset keepers.

He was the only overseas player that I could remember who had kept wicket at some point in his career.

Trescothick also took the gloves on occasion, notably for England and I suppose Kieswetter counts as overseas-ish.

Not too long to go until both he and Jacques Rudolph are able to play for England.

Just imagine the side we could have:

Strauss (Born in Jo'burg)
Cook (English)
Shah (Born in Karachi)
KP (South African)
Rudolph (South African)
Kieswetter (South Africa)
Flintoff (English)
Broad (English)
Mushtaq (Pakistani)
Anderson (Unfortunately English )
Jordan (Born in Barbados)

Truly an English team to be proud of     Tongue

Next time say Saqlain because I was just wondering if you're out of your mind by going for Mushtaq Ahmed.

Mushtaq always kept things a bit more simple, but Saqlain always had to keep innovating. In business, as they say, innovation is necessary but it is also the riskiest thing one can do. Now we know why Saqlain is not in the Pakistani side, he really did get found out by many batsman, not to mention his obsession with creating new deliveries which did the same thing as the last one.
Such a shame, back in 1999, when he was still 23 he looked like he could be one of the best off spinners in history, now he is just a faded memory.
And no, he will never play for England.

Mumbai has lot of excellent players Zuhair. Some of them I can think of are:

Sunil Gavaskar (Best Indian opening batsman)
Farokh Engineer (I haven't seen him play. But most of them say he is the best Wicket keeper batsman for India)
Dilip Vengsarkar
Sachin Tendulkar  (One of the best no.4 for India)
Vijay Merchant (again haven't seen. But have read that he was an excellent player)
Karzan Ghavri
Vinoo Mankad (One of the best All-rounders from India and was a part of the first spin trio)
Zaheer Khan
Subhash Gupte (The best Indian Leggie as per what I have read)
Ravi Shastri
Vinod Kambli
Sanjay Manjrekar
Sandeep Patil
Ajit Agarkar
Ajit Wadekar

Sadly I cerainly dont know that. He was handled poorly by the board and they started prefering kaneria over Saqlain. And when kaneria had a few good series against the mighty bangladeshis they completely forgot Saqlain. He was also strugling with a knee injury. But they never got him back, never took him in confidence. He certainly was a very very fine bowler. Must have played a lot more than he actually did. Was easily a 100+ test matches guy

I still think a lot of his demise was his own doing. He needed more form in the big games when he actually was given a chance and then when he didn't perform he became a scapegoat, which was really unfair.

he got that so called  chance straight in a test match against the indians of a lifeless track. and you cant just judge Saqlain on one poor performance and throw him out. that is pakistan politics in the game of cricket which destroyed him. Pity

Fair call. I especially found him effective in ODIs, which Mushtaq Ahmed was never quite as adept at.
An attack consisting of Akram, Waqar, Saqlain, Mushtaq Ahmed is as balance as you can get. A left arm quick, right arm quick, off spinner and leg spinner. Don't know how many tests they all played together in though, not many I'm guessing.
