    Posted: 07 March 2012 at 6:16pm
The Asia Cup 2012 kicks off in Bangladesh on Sunday. Whatmore's first assignment for Pakistan who after reaching their peak of beating ENG 3-0 in tests, out of no where have started to struggle, once again showing their mercurial nature.

A crucial tournament for the struggling World Champions India, trying to prove their dominance, another chance for Bangladesh to show their worth, while a great opportunity for SLN, after their remarkable performances in Australia to show their dominance among the Asian teams.

BAN have dropped Tamim Iqbal, which is as shocking a decision as it can get! India drop Sehwag, while Pakistan drop Shoaib Malik and Imran Farhat while giving a chance to Nasir Jamshed at the top.

18 March will decide the winner of Asia Cup. Pakistan or India for me SL are like NZ always good for practice but will never rule and finally good to see Farhat getting out hope to never see him again.

"SL are like NZ always good for practice but will never rule"

That's why they are pushing AUS all the way and qualified top of the group in the CB series? That's why they chased over 300 in consecutive ODIs against RSA? That's why they are World Cup runners-up? After PAK's recent showing against ENG (who aren't even that good an ODI team), I can't see them causing any major worries, especially against sides more adept at playing mystery spin. BAN have no chance. It's between IND and SL, probably SL because of the confidence factor.

So in the end Australia won CB Series this is why i said that BP and the last thing you do is to count Pakistan out.

SLN have only now done well after a series of defeats including defeat at home to AUS and they lost 4-1 no less to Pakistan.

I wouldn't say SLN are similar to NZL but honestly they seem to do well only to "an extent".

Still this will be an interesting series, It's difficult to predict a winner but I absolutely expect Pakistan to be in the finals, possibly against SLN because IND seem to have lost all the confidence they had last year. PAK v SLN most likely final although personally I'd love to see an Indo-Pak finale!

India have only lost confidence away Sam.  Its a far different India you will see turn up in these games.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka too are tough sides in these conditions Spinny, agreed India have been doing exceedingly well in the sub continent, but PAK and SLN are not ENG, NZL or WI who will struggle in these conditions, I expect India to get a real tough time,

The first game of the tournament going right down to the wire here, not sure if BAN have improved or Pakistan have dipped, but after a fantastic foundation set by the openers, PAK struggled to 262/8, BAN at one stage were 135/5 and have now recovered to 201/5 needing 62 off 54 balls, very much possible with Shakib and Nasir in... can Pakistan get out of jail?

It is high time we stop seeing matches involving Bangladesh as walkovers. Its been a good 20 years they are playing international cricket - they have been consistently bad - but if and when they end up winning against a  proper team, it should not be viewed as an upset.

For me Bangladesh will always remain Underdogs and their win will be always an upset. They are playing at home and still lose. They simply cant win against top 6 teams away or home. Had ICC invest in Ireland, Holland or Afghanistan, they should have been far ahead of BD.
Its Pakistan who helped them to get test status by losing with that great team. After that Pakistan never lost to them.

I do agree that BAN have a long long way to go, esp if you consider the next WC< it'ss be in AUS and NZL and I think BAN will struggle BIG time to make an impact given those conditions, they've hardly played in AUS and NZL before. Then again that is the problem, they hardly get any games out side the subcontinent.

I do agree with Zuhair though, after so much of international experience, a BAN win should not
really be considered as a "Surprise" result, although it'll still be fair to term it as an "Upset"

Nonetheless Pakistan do get out of Jail and now it's time for India and Sri Lanka to clash against each other, SLN favts, but India are back in the sub continent and this is where they are really strong.

Again, too much reliance on Shakib to get the job done - awesome player, but he needs way more support with both the ball and the bat. BD rely too much on left arm spin, they need to find some accurate pace bowlers for one, and batsmen who can really pace out an innings. They seem to have Pakistan's traditional problems with the bat and India's traditional problems with the ball!

Man - these Indians look a totally different batting unit playing in these conditions.  Have to feel for the Lankans bowlers as well - they dished absolute trash but  their bodies seemed tried still recovering from the long CB series

See what I said Sam, totally different India you'll see in these conditions.  Back to the old India, Gambhir getting a ton (which has been rare lately) and late onslaught by Raina & Dhoni.

I don't know how much time i'll say this, but Kohli is sensational.  He is in a different league to the current generation of players.  His attitude towards batting is really good.

I really want to ask Zuhair and Spinny what totally different means?? even in Australia they were scoring well in Odi's and Gambhir, Kohli and Dhoni were in good form so what is different?

well India are a much better side in these conditions, I agree spinny, but even Pakistan and Sri lanka do well in these conditions, so I thought it won't be as simple for India. Mikey and Mystery are right, Gauti and Virat have been in good touch even in Australia but normally you'd expect Indian batting to click more often in these conditions and some how Indian bowlers adjust to these conditions better than other bowlers, that makes a difference.

having said all that, SLN to be honest struggle against India for some strange reason, in the last 3 years they have lost almost all bi-lateral series and important tournaments to India. Against Pakistan, and again it depends on which Pakistan turns up, it could be different, Pakistan won't lay down so easily like Lanka.

I want to see two changes in Pakistan team for the crucial game against SLN, Wahab Riaz should be in for Cheema, It is beyond me why Cheema is being preferred or Wahab! second, Hammad Azam coming in for Asad Shafiq, Asad is a good test player but I'm not entirely convinced about his ODI abilities.

Pakistan win, in fact they thrash Sri Lanka, the kind of cricket Pakistan have played over the last 18 months is awesome, except for the ODI's against ENG, it in fact is very surprising that they lost so tamely to ENG because otherwise they have been in top form. Good start for Dav Whatmore.

Hammad did play today ahead of Asad which was good to see and Cheema got wickets, now with pakistan in the finals I'd like to see Gul being rested and Wahab play against India. Despite the wickets that Cheema has got, I'm not convinced about his ODI abilities. One more good change will be to drop Younus Khan who has been is misrable form and perhaps play Azhar Ali, but the Azhar is no good for ODI's either.

Azhar is pretty good but I'd rather have Shafiq in place of Younus, whose time in ODIs seems to be up. Pakistan were clearly the better team and the Sri Lankan outfit looked very tired and not interested. Sunday Ind-Pak game is just going to be a dress rehearsal for the final

Yes Sam Pakistan lost to England was to me a upset as most of us were expecting Pakistan to win easily and Gul is bit like Johnson if you rest him he will be all over the place just keep on playing him and agree with Zuhair Younus date is up Shafiq should replace him.

Younus, a brilliant test player, but was never really a good ODI player, he had to be in the team because after Inzamam and Mohammed Yousuf left there was no experienced player left in the side, but I think now with Misbah and Afridi doing well and Umer Akmal playing more maturely. he can be dropped.

Ideally I'd prefer Ahmed Shahzad rather than Asad or Azhar, not only is Shahzad a good player but he has got some attitude which is what a team needs these days, look at Kohli, he is quite short tempered but see how successful he is... Pakistan always had people like Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar Aamer Sohail who were ready to give it back to the opponent, such characters are missing now, giving this team a "Soft" outlook.

You can tell Tendulkar has been biding his time, waiting for this match against BAN so he can stroll to a 100 whilst being unchallenged. Unless he plays a rash stroke now, it's there for the taking.

99 would have been more memorable than 100, like Bradmans average of 99.

A great achievement but the occasion (meaningless Asia Cup match against a lesser team) isn't really fitting.

It is however his first ODI century against Bangladesh, so you could argue that was fitting.

Another Tendulkar century ended in a defeat. This is really sad.
But he batted too slow between 80 and 100 runs. If he had batted for the team India should have got to 310-320.
