SA 250-8 and Boucher unbeaten on 55 , a typically gutsy effort by the keeper. That's a lead of 283 , not to be sneezed at on this pitch.

Almost every ball does a bit , batting is decidedly tricky.

Anything over 300 is likely to be enough. Martyn and Gilchrist are batting like women , this could well be Martyn's final test match.

If Langer can't bat today , I can't see Australia winning , simple as that!

I heard that for a team to chase runs at the wanderers would most likely not win if the total is around 280

It's a tough ask , Ponting will be the key. If he clicks , Australia will have a chance . If he fails I think South Africa will scent victory.

Yep , Hayden failed again and the two in-form players at the crease.

4-1 Ponting 1* Hussey 3*

292 needed for victory after Brett Lee got Boucher and Ntini earlier today , SA all out for 258.

Boucher has made a habit of batting with SA tail in all the test matches between SA and Aus this summer, he's been just as much a thorn in Aust. side as hussey has been in SA's.

Once again though, it seems as if it will be up to Hussey and Ponting to score the runs... A return to form from Gilly would do no harm either... he showed a glimpse of it in the 2nd innings last test when he hammered Nel for 22.

I reckon your 100% right about Martyn though Sledg.... i think Symonds is in the same category though.....

Ponting OUt, Inside egde from Kallis to Boucher... 2 for 33, SA definetly on top

i also feel symonds is batting like a ferry and just needs to play shots. I don't know how you can say martyn and gilly are batting like women, there playing shots and getting out from playing shots, so where did you pull that one from??? SYmonds is batting like a little girl who hasnt learnt how to hit the ball instead of using his talent and record for most sixes in match which has been overtaking by a guy from a opposition of mine who hit 29 sixes in one match and made his 100 of 22 balls and then got to 200 from 50 (in a one dayer) and the worst thing about was our team had just failed with the bat and just made 160 of 40 overs which was passed in 8 overs  but i still finished with best figures of 2/68 of 8 overs with the new ball.

Back to the game i hope symonds and hussey finish this game off and both make 100s

Australia 139-2 , Hussey 63* and Martyn 54*

Hussey leading a charmed life after being lbw and caught at the wicket - both given not out by the officials.

Martyn looking assured and could well save his test career here if Australia get up to win.

South Africa have problems , Nel is ill and the rest of the attack looks pretty toothless. Shaun Pollock is a shadow of his former self and looks a pretty sad sight.

Ntini once again showed his limitations and faults in his technique. As soon as he came around the wicket he literally ran straight down the pitch!! He's always had this problem and I just find it amazing that no-one has been able to cure him of it. His inability to vary his pace also makes him rather tame when the ball softens , top players don't get out to run of the mill up and downers!

The pitch seems to be playing better today , which is surprising. The impressions made on day one are still there , but the South Africans don't seem able to exploit them.

3-0 is a distinct possibility now and still 29 overs before the new ball......

Australia 163/2 at Tea, Hussey 72* and Martyn 69*, 129 runs more needed for victory with 8 (essentially 7 due to Langers Injury) wickets in hand

Martyn looks to have saved his spot with a timely return to form, fantastic balance between defence and attack, and elegant as always.

Hussey was lucky early on, but since then has looked nothing but class, and looks to be yet again steering Australia to victory. If SA cannot get more than 2 wickets tonight they will be in danger and yet again show their inability to finish of a side. However, that being said, it aint over till the fat lady sings.

5-0 You Beauty!!!!!

Thanks for the many fantastic memories Marto, Langer, Warney & Pidg

It's looking ominous for the locals Claps!! They must find a way to stifle the scoring until the new ball comes due.

After that it's just the simple matter of knocking over the batsmen!!

Oh for an Allan Donald.......

Oh how true about Allan Donald, since he retired they haven't really had someone who has been able to turn the game in an instant.... Although i think it's pretty obvoius they are missing the spirit of Andre Nel though

Listening live on Radio through the ABC here in Aust., a lot of discussion about the use of the 3rd Umpire for decisions after yet again the umpires have made horrid decisions in the match.

The two catches were very controversial Claps , it's been a tough 4 days for the standing officials.

WICKET!!! Again Boje traps Hussey LBW for 89. A fantastic innings again by Hussey, the doors slightly ajar now for the South Africans after that wicket. Well Done Boje

still 94 runs need by the Australians.... Another failure by symonds here will almost certainly end his test career, a surefire test for the shaggy haired Queenslander.

Warne doesn't look like lasting very long. It will probably be up to Martyn and Lee if Australia are to win this.

Roscoe gets it right.

Cracking test match, let's hope for a grandstand finish in the morning. Langer coming in at No 11 to hit the winning runs would be a story and a half

Symonds never needed to safe his career. He will against bangladesh and then watson will play with symonds in the ashes as kaspa will get dropped and then maybe tait or someone like that will keep swapping with the allrounders. But that 29 proved symonds can bat normally under pressure and all he did was play his shots.

I feel his just understanding that he needs to be aggresive in test matches like gilchrist, sehwag and flintoff has done and i forgot peiterson

A cameo of 29 in a losing cause won't save him Macca! This Australian side hasn't the solidity of Waugh or Border's sides. At 180-2 you could put your house on Australia getting up with ease - not anymore!

What was required was Symonds playing a responsible knock and still being there on 20-odd this morning. He seems incapable of getting it right and I question his temperament.

The new ball is but 2 overs away and Martyn and Lee have to start all over again. Will Martyn be thinking back to 1994 at Sydney when he choked ? Probably not , he's much more mature now and will just be concerned with seeing off the new ball.

Brett Lee is a tough cricketer and decent batsman , but he'll be pressurised this morning. Both must play straight and funnily enough , I think Martyn is the more likely to play an uppish shot (maybe to 3rd man , ala the ashes) and get out than Lee is.

Andre Nel will be back this morning , but will he get 1st use of the new ball in such tight circumstances? My guess is that Polly will get it , 44 runs just is too tight a situation for some of Nel's mixed bag.

Whatever happens , it'll be a tension-filled 1st hour and god help anyone who drops a catch!!

Boring , this test cricket , isn't it!!

I think it's back to the good ol' Martyn. I think all the people who doubted him are stupid. If you watched that 2nd test where he made 57, you could see he was finding his form again.

It's the Martyn back from he good ol' days of 2004.

Yeah. Today I hope he gets a century not out. He needs it, and it'll be a clear message to the englishman touring here at the end of the year.

Given that he looks increasingly troubled by short pitched bowling spells I suspect England won't be overly troubled if Martyn hangs on to his Test place until November

As I expected , they've entrusted the new ball to Pollock and not Nel. It's probably the right way to go , but it again highlights South Africa's conservative approach. Polly hasn't scared anyone in this match.
