Is it not down to the boards that there was only 2 Tests - and I would bet they would be looking at the empty grounds thinking they made the right decision. Those people are only interested in what brings in the money.

The crowds were very disappointing Clobs , especially in Cape Town. Why that was I'm not too sure , but test cricket in November hasn't been played here since 1920 and the weather was pretty grim. It was free to get in on the final day at Wanderers and the public still stayed away - the long format of the game isn't well supported here or anywhere outside of England and Australia.
I do expect better crowds in Cape Town for the Sri Lankan New Year test - not because of the opposition (which is pretty ordinary) , but because it's a traditional fixture over the festive season. |

Imagine them missing one of the most enthralling Tests in recent times and then flocking in to see a likely one-sided drubbing inflicted by SA. Hope SL put up a good fight.

Yes , both tests were rivetting , showing just why it's the showpiece of the game and why the players want to excel in the format. Maybe they'll bea knock on effect and it might wake the paying public up - I seriously hope so , test cricket needs a boost.
When SA was readmitted the country went cricket daft and all the early test matches were sell outs on each and every day. It helped that the side was also pretty good and competitive , but within a few short years the crowds started to thin dramatically. It's not the cost , watching cricket in SA is extremely cheap (R80 per day at Newlands - always the costliest in SA) , but the blanket TV coverage on the local TV network as well as Sky make it easily accessible at no cost must affect numbers at the grounds. In days gone by here the area within 50km of the test being played had a TV blackout and the numbers attending were significantly enhanced. The idea was shelved though because the sponsors felt they were being short changed and threatened to withdraw their support. With the test arenas being in the major cities in the country , I suppose they had a point. Pity though , the idea did get people into the grounds. |

Interesting Sledge, didn't know that. So for how long was the blackout tactic employed? It's certainly innovative but seems a bit unfair on those living 49km away; literally being forced to go to the ground to see any live cricket.
The crowds weren't that bad in the recently concluded series. I can't see the crowds improving much for the SL series, especially considering the contest doesn't have the same appeal of a visiting Australian tour. The advantage for SA is that they have a world-class outfit so as the team's popularity grows and as it keeps getting better, the SA public may be more encouraged to visit the grounds and see it first-hand. |

SLedger, the TV blackout use to happen in the West Indies as well. Whichever country in the Windies had the match, they couldn't see the game on TV. With cable TV around, it doesn't matter whether they do it or not now (i'm not sure if they still blackout the games in the respective countries).

Distances of 50kms in this part of the world are like popping to the off licence in England BP !
Sri Lanka shouldn't really test SA , but the 1st day crowd at Newlands will be close to a sell out BP. In days gone by the rest of SA went back to work on January 2nd whilst Cape Town got an extra day's holiday. That came about not because the SA government had a soft spot for people in the Cape , but because absenteeism was so high on 2nd January that it was decided to officially give them the extra day as no-one went to work anyway! |
