Topic: Australia Vs South Africa Posted: 16 December 2008 at 11:41pm |
South Africa take on the mighty Aussies (not so mighty anymore) in their own backyard tonight and it should be a very competitive series, seeing as they are the top 2 ranked team in world cricket. Nevertheless, SA has a history of choking against the Aussies.
One reckons it could be different this time around with some fearless youths in the side - De Villers and the electrifying Dale Steyn. For me, these two guys are the key for SA. De Villers is good against spin and lateral movement and swing is his major worry against seamers but this Aussie attack isn't famous for swing so that's one less trouble.
Hayden holds the key for Australia. When he's in form and scores, surely you'll back the Aussies not to lose, especially in their own backyard. Stuart Clark is a big loss. His magnificent accuracy in helpful conditions will be missed!
All in all, both teams have good pace attack, a good batting line up and top class fieldsmen.

So, Ricky Ponting wins the toss and decided to bat. Both teams have the same balance really, 6 batsmen, wicket keeper, spinner and the 3 prong pace attack.
Pity I won't get to see much of the game, I'll be relying on highlights. I'd give anything to be in the stands watching Steyn, Morkel, Lee and Johnson bowl 140+kph and those balls flying off that Perth deck.

Ponting may be regretting that decision with Ntini taking 2 early wickets. Ponting out for a golden to Ntini which will set the alarm bells ringing in the Australia dressing room.
Normally when this happens somebody stands up to be counted and saves the Aus innings. Will that happen today???

3 wickets down and Hussey who's normally so reliable for the Aussies has quacked and now the Australians are under real pressure. Katich and Clarke at the crease with both Steyn and Ntini looking to really rip through this batting lineup.
What a magnificent spectacle we could have here. Shame I don't have a TV to watch it (got to love internet updates, thanks Cricket World )

This must surely be one of the weakest batting line-up's the Aussies have fielded in some time. SA are bowling well but all three player's had the opportunity to leave the ball.
Steyn hitting his straps now too with Clarke and Katich at the crease poking around to balls just short of a good length. I can't see Symonds (possibly Haddin) and the tail contributing much against this pace attack.

That's what I like to hear.
I reckon that the runs will have to come from somewhere though or this could be one easy game for South Africa.
P.S Bondy!! Long time no see. Where've you been???

3/56 and a steady recovery after a horror start for the Aussies. De Villiers took two wonderful catches and the Proteas are bubbling with confidence. This is surely their best chance to win down under. Australia lost in this groung last time they played against India.
This ground is supposed to be the trump card of the Aussies but having lost once very recently they can be beaten. I hope that they Proteas don't prove their credentials of being 'chokers' and if that does not happen I can see them winning this game.

Gutsy stuff from Katich and Clarke to take the home side through to
lunch with the total on 74-3. Wonderful start by the visitors and some
fine slipping by AB - they look really up for this.
Anyone had a bet on Ponting
and Hussey going without troubling the scorers ? Funny ole game
isn't it !

What a seesaw contest , all SA in the 1st half hour and then Clarke and
Katich almost reach tea undefeated. Then both fall in consecutive overs
(how often does that happen after a big stand?) just before the
interval and SA are back on top!
Symonds and Haddin the
new men in and a massive task ahead of them in the final session.
172-5 and the visitor's dressingroom will be buzzing now.

299 for 7 now, which Australia will be relatively happy about I would imagine.
It could have been better if Symonds, having got well set, hadn't allowed his ego to get the better of him - having seen Haddin just hit a big 6 he just had to show what he could do, and duly holed out.
Haddin is gone now too but Lee is going well.

Seems like a fine day of Cricket with Australia ending on 341-9. Not a bad first innings total by any means but they still need to bowl well when their turn come so that they don't give SA nothing small to chase last innings. Not too sure how the pitch is playing but generally, bouncy and pacy pitches do make very good batting pitches from day 3-5.

Terrific day's play and I expect much of the same tomorrow. SA need to
knock over that last stick quickly and then get stuck into Smith and
company. It's a good pitch and there's little margin for error for the
bowlers - they'll be plenty of boundaries tomorrow , if they stray.

i still think australia have a real strong batting line-up kattich has batted magnificent this yr ponting who has averegd 45 or sumthing this yr wich is still pretty good hussey who has also scored alot of runs this year michael clarke who is getting more consistent the more games he plays andrew symmonds who will get better the more time he spends at the crease and brad haddin who is just starting to bat like he does for NSW so if you take all this into account they have probably the strongest batting line up in the world with india

Lunch on day 2 and SA have lost McKenzie early and are 26-1. Worse
still for the visitors , the last pair for Australia took them to
375 before Ntini had Siddle nick one behind. But that was not before
he'd scored 23 and Krejza was left unbeaten on 30.
The pitch is a good
one , little movement off the pitch and no noticeable swing
either. The total's not that imposing and SA have made some big
totals on wickets considerably worse than this one in the last couple
of years. It wasn't the Aussies bowling though and Ponting and company
will still feel they can take a 1st innings lead. That the Aussie
tail all made runs should encourage the visitors - plenty of time
because of the Aussie scoring rate , the SA batsmen can get in , play
risk-free cricket and look to get past 400. I've a funny feeling
that we might see a return to form of Kallis.

Krejza has bowled well this morning. Ever since his first delivery he's flighted the ball nicely with gile and turn. He's giving Kallis and Smith some trouble now and he could be the key to breaking through established partnerships.
Big wicket getting Amla with a beauty too.

Yes Bondy , that was a much needed wicket , he was playing very nicely.
Quickly followed by Smith , out playing an expansive drive that he
could only drag on. Good match in the offing !
150-3 at tea with Kallis 28* De Villiers 16*

Both batsman looking good and Krejza needs to sort out his length. If he keeps dropping short on this wicket it'll keep sitting up for the batsman to cut and pull.
They're saying Johnson has been the pick of the bowlers at tea. I disagree. He's a wicket taker but continues to be wayward offering up the odd four ball up for the batsman. Lee's been ok, a bit down on pace but his line has been good which is encouraging for the Aussies.
The game is well poised with an interesting session ahead.

I'm still out on Johnson. His control is questionable and he seems to
take wickets with poor deliveries. I suppose it's the results
that count and he always seems to have decent numbers in the wickets
column.
172-3 and going nicely are the visitors. Maybe Fletcher's work with Kallis is bearing fruit.

Just an aside , Shane Warne is giving commentary on radio here . He's a
breath of fresh air , no platitudes , just sharp cricketing
soundbites. I particularly enjoyed his take on the abilities of
the two men at the crease , Kallis and De Villiers. His 1st hand
experience of bowling to both men and how their respective games have
developed was fascinating. Straight talking as always , he
thought AB pretty easy to get a few years back by just tying him down
and wait for the rash shot. Alternatively , he said bowling to
Kallis was always a real challenge and he still rates him as one of the
best players around.
All that and a good few laughs too - he's a natural !

I didn't realise quite how poor SA's record against the Aussies is. Just 2 test wins since 1996. I imagine that they would be pretty happy if they managed a series win in the next year or few.
They look pretty well matched at the moment and it wouldn't surprise me if they produced at least one classic to match the drama in India this week. Pity they're only playing 3 Tests really, particularly as they're finding time for 2 2020s and 5 ODIs.

I'm looking forward to it too. Australia in SA will be a fascinating contest.
Johnson gets the break-through and has a close shout on Duminy with his first ball at the crease. The ball to dismiss McKenzie was an absolute beaut!! Well taken by Haddin too.
Another wicket here and Australia are on top as I don't see the SA tail contributing in the same way the Australian's did.

And Kallis goes with a classic Johnson delivery, angling across the right-hander and possibly moving a little off the seam for an easy catch for Haddin.
Boucher in now and Australia are on top with two new batsman at the crease.

Some turnaround here after the South Africans were cruising. AB
and Kallis gone to that man Johnson , who now has 4 wickets!
237-5 with 5 overs left in the day . Class act , Johnson !

A very good session of bowling on what looks like a pretty flat pitch. I'm finding Test cricket a lot more enjoyable to watch now that the teams are more evenly matched. It should be interesting to see the SA bowlers in reply tomorrow.

Excellent, really pleased to hear that. It's like us and the Kiwis this year. It's actually a really good model for planning series'.
Looks like we're in for some good stuff this winter.
Stunning turnaround from Johnson this morning...

Roscoe's right , the pitch holds no demons at all ! Mitchell
Johnson must be a tad frustrated that the 90 overs were up , he must've
felt he could've knocked over a Tendulkar , a Pieterson , a Lara and a
Bradman in successive balls if he'd got just one more!
Two successive tests that show the
unpredictability and the excitement that test cricket can generate ,
surely that must get the youngsters obsessed with T20 thinking ?
I'm not writing SA off
either , both sides have strengths and weaknesses , as the old
shipbuilders said ,tomorrow should be riveting.
