Congratulations, use your time wisely.
When you win the toss - bat.
If you are in doubt, think about it - then bat. If you have very big doubts, consult a colleague - then bat.

Right well can we get back to discussing the cricket now, something that isn't done nearly enough on here.  Saying that i'm not sure there is much that can be added to this subject, could be time for a close unless anyone can bring any new impetus to the subject.

Initial question was bowled by a SLOW bowler, that is what I based my answer on.

fishcake LOL you make me laugh.

The issue surrounding beamers for me is whether there intentional or not. Often they aren't except ruffing up a batsman with a beamer means they can often lose confidence and it disrupts their innings. A ploy used by some, rather than no other....
Good one Graham!

I bowled one today, wasnt entirely intentional, ball was a bit wet, luckily for the batsman it was a training ball so it didn't break anything =p

It was my mate and he kept despoiting my to far parts of a muddy field...

it was only a soft ball so it didn't do any serious damage which is more then can be said for a crafty little leg break i threw in that hit him where you wouldnt wish to be hit while not wearing a box...

I personally dont wear much protection, just pads, gloves and box, I always felt that it gives me more reason to hit the ball, where there are people with thigh guards and chest protectors, armguards and all the rest, each to their own I suppose.

Maybe I'm strange but the feeling of getting hit in the body by a cricket ball isn't pain as such, just feels dull, and reminds me that i screwed up and missed one.

I've been hit by both fast bowlers and bowling machines, maybe I just have good pain tolerance, it bruises a little but it doesnt do any serious damage. Maybe one day I'll take a ball somewhere that does hurt me quite a bit, like the head. But until then i'm ok with the protection I have.

Thats a bit like shutting the gate after the horse has bolted. I have a few mates that started wearing helmets after they they were hit. I don't always wear one in a game, but I always do at training, bowlers always seem to try a bit harder trying to impress the skipper.

Well where I play the ball tends to keep pretty low so the chances of getting hit in the head are pretty low unless the other team has a 7ft bowler. Only a few times has the ball gotten to head height when i've been at nets and the few times it has I've played it competantly.

Anyway i'd go by the argument that anyone who doesnt wear a helmet is probably silly enough that there isn't much in there to damage but I like the Sachin Tendulkar quote of "it gives you more reason to hit the ball" and while I dont claim to be a millionth of the batsman he is he has a point. if you dont have a helmet on (or maybe if you do I dont know) and the ball is heading for your face then your body plays the shot for you, which gives some interesting results and are often good shots.

I've never been a fan of helmets just because they tend to give you a bad field of vision, if they ever design one with a perspex panel on the front then maybe but until then i'll keep trying my method of duck and hit until I take one in the face.

I always were a thigh pad, gives me more confidence as a batsman.

It's the top edge that has always worried me, not so much getting hit by a bouncer. Does Tendulker wear a helmet?

I've never seen Sachin not wearing a helmet ever. Whenever he's batted, he's always wore a helmet.
"His classical hits down the ground, met with a checked drive, were Tendulkar at his best. It was though he had a new lease of life." - Sachin Tendulkar's return to cricket with a 91-Ball century.

My point was it makes his quote about if you dont wear one it makes you watch the ball closer, seem a bit silly.

Yet another bizarre method of how you become an excellent batsman.

Im an opening bat so I always wear a helmet in games but I have now also started wearing them at practice since it better simulates the field of vision I would have during a match.

The Flicx mat we use can be a little unpredictable.  One of our middle-order bats was getting ready to drive a good length ball a few days ago, it shot up and hit him in the shoulder.  He never wears a helmet, which I personally think is a bit silly on this pitch.

Maybe the surface that the Flicx is laid on made the ball jump. If the surface underneath isn't somewhat good, the mattings won't play good.

Beamers are very dangerous things...the sight of a cricket ball hurtling towards your head at speed - frightening. My mate used to bowl to me in the nets and if the ball was wet it slipped pretty badly. Enough said.

Since the ball the hit the stumps, he should be given out.
I wouldn't call it a "BEAMER". It must have looked like a beamer but I guess it wasn't too high.

The only beamers that scare me are the ones coming head height and to the balls. Other than that, I'm fine. The other day, I hit a fast bowler ball over waist height for six over extra cover.
