As of today's date 07/07/08, according to the Cricket World MVP Ratings, James Marshall (NZ) is the ODI Number 1 batsman and Sehwag (India) the Test Number 1 batsman. Phil Mustard (Eng) is the T20 Number 1 batsman.

Shiv Chanders and Kumar Sangakkara.

In troubled times, being philosophical helps a great deal, it helps you to remain sane and not do any further damage.

Been smoking again SW ? While Chanderpaul is more than decent he can't be rated in the top 5 , maybe the top 10 batsmen playing today.

I'm basing mine on form batsman, and Shiv and Kumar has been the two most outstanding recently.  Shiv would never be in the top 5 bats I've seen though, just to clear that up.  Lara, Tendulkar, Ponting, Dravid, Kallis, Inzamam, Gilchrist,  would all be ahead of him in my book.  All this came from me reading that James Marshall was number 1 in ODI's so I just threw in who I think was number one on form.

Current form, Chanderpaul, Kumar Sangakkara and Hussey.

Cahnderpaul and Sanga would think still a class below Tendulkar and Lara. Hussey very well can be there, but have to prove against good spin bowling and reverse swing in the sub continent.

Ponting, although not in prime form, still is there.

Hussey hasn't been in the best of touch lately crapbag although the ratings still have him high up.  He did handle Murali real good in Aussie so I think he can play spin well.  Hussey watches the ball real hard; bad form or really good bowling is what is needed against him.  I rate him a lot!

I rate him well too.
His very hard to stop when in good form.
M.Hussey is the one I am watching out for when Australia tour India.
You know, I'm trying to decide whether to change my siggy or not...

No one is talking about little master here. I will vote for Sachin Tendulkar as one of the best batsman world have seen so far in this era.

Not only he is highest run scorer in both forms of the game Test and ODI's but he has also scored most century in both forms of the game.

Cricket village, I think this thread is more about 'form' players than the best we've seen.

Best batsmen Ponting and Mohammed Yousaf. Tendulkar has been good but dosent produce enough anymore. Best of last ten years maybe Tendulkar but Ponting and Yousaf currently.

True! I cant get over his 2006 form. Current form ponting and clarke although hes been injured lately. Dravid had a good knock in the current test, maybe signals a return to form for him.

If Hayden maintained his consistency, particularly pre 2005 , when he was averaging almost 60 then he'd be up there. By the end of his career he was proven to be human.
Ideal cricketer: Bowl like Warne, bat like Tendulkar, field like Jonty!!

Raj has a point, not many people will watch from an unbiased side when deciding these things.  Lara gave me a lot of sheer thrill but Tendulkar is simply amazing, see, there you go, unbiasness hahaha
