1. Gilchrist- A fine keeper and a fine batsman. He has been the best keeper-batsman in the world for quite a few years now and is known as the best keeper-batsman in history!

2. Sangakkara- In terms of keeping, probably the best keeper today! A useful and quite consistent higher order batsman!

3. Akmal- A fine young keeper! For a while, he looked like he had ended Pakistan search for a decent opening pair when he scored 2 back to back centuries against England in the ODI series late in 2005, but then his batting form went down...and so did his batting position. An exceptional batsman when batting under pressure.

Dhoni is not a batsman, he's a pinch-hitter...only that he's a sensible pinch-hitter...which is why he scores runs! But at the end he is still a pinch-hitter and that's why I don't rate him as the best batsman out of the keepers in ODIs or Tests!

MS Dhoni will be next few years or so.

Kumar Sangakkara, he's a brilliant player. I'm not sure if Dhoni will ever be the best.

In my opinion the top four would be

  1. Gilchrist
  2. Sangakkara
  3. Dhoni
  4. Boucher

It must be Dhoni in ODIs because he made it to no1 in the world in the batting rankings within a year which is pretty unprecedented seeing as rankings only get that high after loads of games. He has finished everyhting off in rpessure situations and no other w/k batsman at present could hit 184* off 147 chasing a daunting 307. In tests it's probably either Gily or Sanga but Akmal and Dhoni have their best to come for sure.

I agree. It's a pity that we don't have Andy Flower to add do it.

I don't agree that Gilchrist is the best ever wicket keeper batsman. It will be Andy Flower. If you have Andy and Gilly who would you select?

If you're talking about one of the greatest batting-wicket keeper, also include Rahul Dravid.

Excuse me. We are taling of wicket keeper - batsman. Their first job is to wicket keep and they must be ranked within top 5 in the country. Dravid is clearly not a wicketkeeper-batsman, but batsman made in to a wicket keeper by circumstances. Sri Lanka's TM Dilshan, Zimbabawe's Tatenda Taibu, West Indies Denesh Ramdin will be a better choice they are even better keepers than Sangakkara (i am not sure whether it is the same for Gilchrist, but definietly not for Akmal)

I said IF YOU"R TALKING ABOUT ONE OF THE GREATEST. It doesn't matter if he's made into or he was. It just depends on how good he is and how well he bats.

One should try to be spot on mate. It's very easy to beat about the bush, but doing or saying something meaningfull and purposeful really takes some efforts, which most of the people are not prepared to put in. Specific, objective, focused, value adding...........are the key words. Wal Bada is right here, because wicket keeper's primary job is to be a wall behind the stumps, then comes his batting. You can never reverse the order, if you have a cricketing brain.

i would say kamran akmal, bcz he has proved his self in test matches and also in one dayers ina very little time .

he has saved pak in difficult situations and he is improving day by day.as far is dhoni concerned he is not perfect for critical situations when ever he gets in situations like this he gets out.all the big knocks he has played are not in such situations where there is pressure . where as kamran akmal has performed in every situation.

I would say Mahendra Dhoni definitely in ODI's. In a few matches I have seen of him on TV, he has absolutely belted the ball into the stands. In Tests he can also be good but Against England in that Test Match in Mumbai he showed that he can get too greedy to score runs too quickly (Monty Panesar caught him second time round!) In Tests the best keeper is most definitely Adam Gilchrist. I mostly say this as he averages around 50 with the bat and can destroy a bowling attack but also I feel that all the other keepers in the world are yet to prove themselves on the Test stage like Adam Gilchrist has. In the Ashes England did very well tactically against Adam Gilchrist and we got him out rather early. If he had stayed in longer the Ashes result could have been different...

MS Dhoni has to prove himself little bit more, he came as one of the destructive batsmen, but now he's form is little down. After few years he will be one of the greatest and best wicketkeeper batsmen in Indian history(not in the world).

Yes Mahendra Dhoni needs to calm down a bit with his batting in test cricket. He's got to stop trying to hit too many sixes (even though he is good to watch!) He will definitely be an incredible wicket-keeper in a few years to come...

He plays brilliantly when he's in form. Remember those 6s in West Indies. Those were absolutely great shots. I agree about his speed. He gets out while trying to hurry up and get big score.

That was brilliant in the west indies by Dhoni. A six off his first ball. He really rattled the bowler.

Yeah six was good on the first ball but getting out in 20 runs was bad.

Oh well, its gone. Dhoni is not the current best batting-wickerkeeper right now. He could be destrucitve batsmen right now.

The best keeper/batsman at the moment has to be Kumar Sangakkara or Kamran Akmal,i'd put gilly there but australian havent played cricket for a couple of months now.

I would say Kumar Sangakkara is better than Kamran Akmal at the moment as Akmal hasn't played as much as Sangakkara yet. But Akmal is definitely a good keeper-batsman.
