Just for you a head to head comparison of Bevan with Sachin tendolkar in ODI, the upper black are of bevan and red are of tendolkar, infact I still cant find anyone with better stats in batting, and mind you these stats do not tell us the number of matches won by both players. Let me add a few more greats in gilli, richards and jones and see the comparison!

Mat   Runs   HS    BatAv  100   50    W     BB   BowlAv   5w   Ct     St

M. Bevan      232   6912   108*  53.58   6    46    36    3/36  45.97   0     69      0
Tendolkar     367  14370   186* 44.48  40   73   142   5/32  43.61   2     108    0
   Gilchrist     242  8233     172   36.42   14   45    -    ---  --------------     348   45
 Viv Richards 187  6721     189*  47.00  11   45    118  6/41   35.83  2      100   0
Dean Jones   164  6068     145   44.61   7    46      3    2/34   27.00  0      54    0

Bevan was a good finisher of an innings , but nowhere close to being the best ever one day player!!

Clobs , maybe we should start a cricketing clinic thread that explains the skills of the game , there's an awful lot of members who are in the dark!!

Good idea.

The number of runs scored per innings is also a useful stat. I don't know what they are not using it. It will show that Sachin is miles ahead of Bevan.

Tendulkar 39.16
Gilchrist 34.02
Richards 35.91
Bevan     29.79

In Bevan's case there is too much notout's for comparison

Bevan was not as great against genuine fast bowling. He had a well known weakness with short picthed bowling and if he as that good how many tests did he play?

Inzamam is a living Legend and I am proud of him as our captain.

Thats an unfair comparison, look at Andrew Symonds, his game wasnt suited to test cricket but that doesnt stop him from being on eof the best ODI players today.

Just looking at the long list of batsmen, if we do not have clear parameters on which to decide whos the best we will always be inclined towards personal favourites, my guide for the best would be the batting average as this has been taken as criteria for most ranking systems.

Highest runs could be other, but than the number of matches should be taken into account, most valuable player as to the number of match winning innings would need to see the oppositions also. quality of batting, technique, prownwss against fast bowlers, not outs, manner in which got out, fastest or most centuries, I dont know what will decide the best in the end.

I believe its not easy to find the best player in ODI atleast!

so far so good!

I won't do that , because the question is subjective. Is the best player ever an allrounder , a batsman or a bowler?? Bowlers get practically no recognition in one day cricket , but tell me a top side that doesn't have several great bowlers?

There have been many wonderful one day players. Garry Sobers was the greatest allrounder in the history of the game (something that all cricket experts around the world accept) , yet he played little one day cricket at all.

If he had , he'd have been an easy choice. As it is I'll just say that Tendulkar , Lara , Ponting , Flintoff , Warne , McGrath , Gilchrist , Wasim , Azurrhadin , Pollock and Kallis are or were top class.
Mental disintegration works for me !!

Exactly, its impossible to find the best player, infact it would be difficult to find the best bowler, batsman or fielder unless we have clearly defined criteria!

Obviously ALL poll questions are subjective.

I have steted what to look at when deciding the greatest player.

So there are not many problems regarding what Sledger is saying

The best ever player is easy in Test cricket as Sir Garfield Sobers had the ability to change a match using the broadest range of skills we have ever seen. Not as good a bat as Bradman, not as good a bowler as lillee or O'Rielly, but the first man you would choose in any team. Who is the first player you would choose for your ODI. I could not rightly choose anyone other than Tendulker since 1990 because the standard of international bowling has dropped badly. Viv Richards was the most devastating batsman in his time against Lille and co but never had to face his team-mates. How would Ponting fair against McGrath, Lee etc. Tendulker has proven himself against the best from three decades. He is the greatest.
Judge the player not by their stats, but by their opposition.

True mate. Add to that never had to play the greatest of spinners as the current lot. Even the mightiest of Windies were suspicious against quality spin, which was extremely rare in that era except for Abdul Quadir and Chandrashekar.

If we take the above criteria, obviously we are looking at someone who has batted, bowled captained a sied and also immpressed his side with his personality. Judging by that tendolkar lacks on two accounts he has a poor run as a captain, and I dont know if he had a massive influence over indian team. The person that comes to my mind is definately Imran Khan, excellent allrounder of his time, best captain for pakistan and had influenced pakistani cricket team to eventually won a world cup!

Now you are beginning to understand my logic why Jayasuriya is regarded is one of the greatest ODI players if not the greatest

I have gone for Bevan, purely for the fact that he was a destructive batsman for the Aussies and averaged over 50 in ODIs, an unbelievable average for one-day international cricket, so that's why I've picked him, he never performed in the test match arena for some reason however.

He played in the era of no-bouncers. He was a good batsman, good fielder and a nice person. But never a good leader, or an icon with an aura around, like Imran, Kapil, Viv, or Sanath. SO he's lacking in tat two departments to call him the greatest.

There are and will never be no answers to these kind of threads. The only 2 that can and will be answered is the Greatest Batter - Bradman by a mile and the Greatest all rounder - Sir Gary. Other than that, its by era's they will be answered by.

The one and only way to get the right answer is to survey the whole country. I mean like survey every single test playing country, and every single human being in those country. Its kind of expected that Sachin Tendulkar will win, because of India's population (don't take it seriously) .

Wasim was a genuis in the ODI no one except for Waqar had more contol over the ball in ODI and he was impossible to play in eth death overs, thats if the team could get past his spell with the new ball. His batting was an underachievemnet to an extent, though he played some sensationak knocks for the team. He was a decent fielder and anexcellent catcher.

Wasim was terribly innacurate with the new ball, he was famous for it, its his contribution with the old ball that got him his 500 wickets.

To Wal Bada, I am sure that the bowlers wont be answered either cause take this forum for example, there are some that says warne is better and others that says murali is better.

For fast bowler, well, there have been too many legendary fast bowlers that has passed through the game to be answered.

Fielder might be able to be answered; From what I have seen, Rhodes was the best by a mile. Truly an awesome fielder!
