Topic: Best Ever West Indian Batsman Posted: 20 January 2007 at 5:55pm |
The West Indies have produced some of the best batsmen ever to play the game, but which one of them do you think is the best and why?

Well, I would go for George Headley! I have never seen him bat but from what I have heard and read about him, he seemed like he was a real good batsman. I actually heard some people say he was probably the best after Don.
I remember Len Hutton writing in one of his autobiography that "Headley could have played on any kind of wicket; even the most treacherous ones." I guess that paints a picture!

This is a very tough one but I think you can narrow it down straight away to Viv, Sobers, Lara and Headley (with all due respect to the others who were very fine players).
Headley - well he was written about in glowing terms by very fine judges and was regarded as the true master of playing on bad pitches.
Sobers was an amazing all round cricketer with an attacking batting approach that surely ranks with the best.
Brian Lara is the best batsman of his generation and a prolific run machine. Nobody since Bradman has piled up so many large scores as Brian Lara.
In the end though I go with Viv. Amazing player who could dominate an attack in such a manner which I have not witnessed in any other player. It is something of a personal choice as well as I grew up watching Viv.
Certainly I would not argue with anyone who picked any of these 4,

burmesedays has it spot on as usual. I never saw Headley or Sobers play but the former appears to have been a massive talent, whilst Bradman himself said Sober's 254 for the Rest of the World was the finest innings he had ever seen in Australia.
Lara has all the gifts and even now he is the guy who when he really really wants to make a score, he will do it, he is that good.
But for me it would be Richards as well, someone I saw lots of. With Viv it wasn't just the runs he scored, the man had this immense aura about him; the refusal to wear helmet, the swagger out to the middle, chewing the gum, it all just said "okay boys, I'm in charge now".

I went with Sobers because of the fact he scored at a similar pace to Viv (I think) and that he scored more runs per game and that he has got 8000 test runs and an average of close to 58 but I fully understand why everyone might go for Lara or Viv but for me Headley didn't play enough matches to be considered as good as the other 3.
Though it is extrememly tight between Viv and Sobers, I think 90% of people would rather Sobers because of his bowling and fantastic fielding.
Plus am I right in saying that his 254 was hit while Sobers had food posining and he was sick several times during his innings? That shows determination which is why I rate him as the finest all rounder and 3rd greatest batsman ever.

Ponting because he's probably going to end up with 50 centuries.

I didn't attach my answer to my original post, so I'll put it down here.
This is a really good question which is the reason I started the thread, in my opinion all of them had their qualities about them. Richards and Sobers were two destructive batsmen and on their day could destroy any bowling line-up in the world without even thinking about it. You have Lara who has broken the world record twice and holds the record for the highest score in both first-class and test match cricket. Then you have Clive Lloyd who was a quality batsman and scored the first century in a World Cup final. Walcott was a brilliant batsman, and one of the three W's and a top player. Greenidge and Haynes were very good openers and could be destructive from ball one and Headley who has been dubbed the top batsman of bad pitches and is only the fourth man to have a test match average of over 60.
But in the end it was a very close toss-up between Richards, Sobers and Lara and I decided to go with Viv Richards. In my opinion Richards was one of the best batsmen ever and probably the best of modern times, and before that only Bradman and maybe Hutton maybe outclass him. He had that knack of just being able to get the Windies out of trouble on numerous occasions and play some wonderful shots. For example that innings of 189* against England when they were struggling on 89-5 and 102-7 yet that innings took the West Indies right up to 272-9, that is some knock and perhaps only he could've done that.
So in my opinion Sir Vivian Richards is the best ever West Indian batsman.

I was lucky enough to see Sobers in his pomp and the memories of
some blistering assaults are still fresh in the memory. His
driving was murderous , the immense shoulder turn coupled with perfect
balance had to be seen to be believed - only Lara comes close to the
great man.
Richards was brutal too , but the 6's over
midwicket from balls outside off seemed effortless - the man's power
was formidable. Clobber is right though , Richards walk to the middle
always caused a stir , he emptied the bars in record time!
Lara has played some of the most
dazzling innings of any player in the history of the game. I've seen
him destroy attacks in England and SA. Seeing him despatch Allan Donald
to all corners of Centurion Park was a highlight. AD was seriously
quick then and Lara smashed him (no other way to describe the assault)
time after time through the cover region. Three fielders were stationed
there by Cronje and all in a hopeless cause - it was exhilarating ,
albeit over far too quickly (he made 60).
George Headley came from a different era and was
obviously a wonderful player. Averaging over 60 on uncovered wickets
has to show true class and he'd be a star today , that's for sure.
Unfortunately there's little footage of the great man , so I cannot
compare him to the other three.
Who's the greatest , I won't even try to come
up with an answer. All are truly brilliant players , but my
favourite had to be Sobers. It wasn't just his batting of
course , he was simply the most complete cricketer the world has seen
- pure genius.

For me it narrows down to Sobers, Richards and Lara, but in the end I went for Lara simply because I'm too young to have seen the other two play so Lara's greatness stays with me more. In all honesty though if I was a selector and the last batting spot was between those three, I'd probably just shrug and say "whichever"!

yes I agree it is quite hard because it is hard to compare players of different eras for more reasons than one. Techonology was different, conditions were different, and plus one of the main things I have not seen all of those players listed!

Have a look at Sobers making his 150 at Lords in 1973 here. Simply amesome.
He was at the time of this innings, "past his best". LOL

I'd have to say Viv Richards. But Brian Lara has dominated in a time where the West Indies have been not much better than minnows, where Richards was playing in the best 11 in the world.

Sobers was a fantastic player...and another fantastic plaer...and then a third fantastic player. Plus he fielded brilliantly too - has there been a better all-round cricketer? Not that I'm aware of

No doubt CM , his only weakness was in captaincy! No great
shakes there , maybe it had something to do with not understanding that
the other ten couldn't perform as he could!

Also, allrounders often don't make the best captains due to having too much to think about, as we saw from Botham and Flintoff.

Well since I ahvnt seen him play I have to compare stats and he doesnt have quite as good a record as Sobers and Richards averaged 50 with his style which is like averaging 75 with Huttons style but thats the only thing that I know about Hutton, his average

Thats correct Sledge, he would have been a great captain to this Australian team. I also think his declaration was sporting, he's had so much stick for it but he didn't want to draw a match, he wanted to give the crowd something to watch. He isn't just a great cricketer, he is a showman, a great sportsman, a legend.

When you win the toss - bat.
If you are in doubt, think about it - then bat. If you have very big doubts, consult a colleague - then bat.
