In the spirit of Jonty Rhodes, who is currently the best fielder in the game today, barring wicketkeepers?
I know names like Ponting and Gibbs spring to mind. Any other choices?

De Villers is a magnificent fielder! I'm surprised Mojo forgot his own man! Oooooops, I think I know why he left him out. He is a wicket keeper too.

Another good South African fielder is Ashwell Prince although I would still go with Ponting as the best fielder

I didn't forget about De Villiers and Prince... I sorely wanted to put them in, but I didn't wanna seem too pro-South Africa. I like maintaining a neutral perspective.

If you are in doubt, think about it - then bat. If you have very big doubts, consult a colleague - then bat. |

Yes Randall was superb, and back in the days when Gower could field and patrolled the other side of the wicket there weren't too many quick singles to be had against England.

Collingwood is a superb fielder, I reckon he's the best at the moment.

I think it's a toss-up between de Villiers and Collingwood for the best fielder in the world at the moment. Both of their fielding skills are immaculate and they rarely put a catch down, either of them. That catch from Collingwood off Hayden in the 2005 NatWest series was unbelievable, as was de Villiers' run-out to dismiss Katich against Australia and he took a very good catch off Inzy in the recent test series.
I think they're both superb fielders, and it's impossible to choose which is the best between them.

The best fielder I've ever seen is Roshan Mahanama. Jonty is quite amazing I agree..but if you carefully noticed the catches taken by Mahanama and Jonty....Mahanama has taken amazing catches from all over the ground.Jonty was just outstanding at backward point.
Now there are many top quality fielders.Yuvraj,Raina,Ponting,Gibbs...Dilshan too can be a competitor. Edited by Tom_da_Cat - 06 March 2007 at 6:46am |

That's because backward point is one of the most crucial positions to defend, and most teams always place their best fielder there. Jonty never fielded anywhere else because he left the less-challenging positions to the less-talented fielders.

I agree, But when u have spinners in your side you need to place your best fielder according to the situation. In most of the matches that Mahanama has played he has taken the most number of catches.Means the captain has always placed him at the crucial spot.

If you had a gully - covers grouping of:
Collingwood Dilshan Symonds De Villiers Then the wagon-wheel for the batsman would have to be very legsided .... wouldn't be too many runs through the off. |

A good discussion, I would say currently it would be tie between Abe, kaif, and collingwood for ground fielding, and probably ponting , Gayle and gibbs being the best with balls in the air, with their phenomenal catching ability. I have seen Abe and Kaif dropping a few sitters too!

True, but then again, how often has there been an established spinner in the South African camp for Jonty Rhodes to field off of? You can't discredit him just because he only fielded in one position. If there was a Rhodes vs Mahanama fielding poll, chances are that Rhodes would win it. (taking nothing away from Mahanama's ability)

Presently it has to be Ponting and Collingwood although Mark Waugh is the best I ever saw.

I agree with Mojo.Yes,definetely Rhodes will win thats because less people have seen Mahanamas ability.
I know,Rhodes didn't hav a chance to field to a spinner. But keep this in mind,,,,, Mahanama was fantastic at slips against fast bowlers as well. I really love to see Rhodes filelding...but Mahanama too is at the very same level or a bit higher. |

If people are going to talk about fielders of the past, I think Eknath Solkar's name must be brought up. I just saw the footage of a couple of his catches and its just incredible.
I have been led to believe that there has never been a better close-in fielder.
