Great fighting spirit Colly , 143. Did you know he's a direct
descendant of Admiral Collingwood , who led the attack at The Battle of
Trafalgar in 1805 ?
Nelson got all the acclaim , but Collingwood drove through the line of the French and Spanish ships , I think you Aussies call that ticker! |

Colly probably takes better catches, i'd think clarke edges him out slightly on runouts though so i'd say they are about on par, they both make exceptional stops at backward point and save alot of runs for the team.

I'd just say I'd like to lead a side with both Collingwood and Clarke
in it! Gibbs , Ponting , Symonds and Jonty would be a nice
addition as well !

I would have to agree with all the fielders mentioned because all of them are exceptional. I think though that as an inner ring fielder, my vote would go with Jonty. However what makes a great fielder in my opinion, is someone who slots seamlessly into many different fielding positions and looks just as good as a specialist in that position. In that case its.... Jonty set the benchmark and others aspired to join him. I'd say
there's little difference between the top guys and they all keep
batsmen honest !

I think AB de Villiers is a great fielder too. Great reactions, and safe hands.

Can't believe you didn't even include Ponting. He's up there with the very best of today.

I take it your South African.
I mean come on, you put Jonty in a list where the rest of the players are current... Roger Harper, Viv Richards and Mark Waugh are among the list of greatest ever, yet you put Yuvray and Kaif and AB ahead???
A more reasonable list maybe:

except michael clarke is probably better than all of them, he certainley hits the stumps more than jonty did, you probably need to compare positions when rating fielders, mark taylor took some amazing catches in the slips, I don't think someone like symonds would be as good in that position.

Dead right about your latter comment. I was tempted to say Bobby Simpson and Tubby as well. Slips fielding is a lot different to out or infielding. But I must say, Symonds and Ponting are extremely versatile and can field absolutely anywhere.
I wouldn't say Jonty was overrated, but Ponting is easily as good.

There are some NZ'ers who are also excellent fielders, e.g - Lou Vincent, Ross Taylor and Hamish Marshall ( I said excellent fielders, not batsmen in Marshalls case anyway). |

Lou Vincent is marvellous, in fact he was selected in the NZ SQuad as 12th man in the first 2 tests (of the 2001/2 series, where NZ drew 0-0 with Aust. in a great effort - n.b. Warne's 100, I mean 99) just because of his fielding. Went on to score a ton in the 3rd test by the way.
Still, those NZ boys probably don't rank with some of the African and Aussie blokes (or W.I. - has anybody noticed Chris Gayle's throwing arm - amazing)

I disagree with you there, they are just as good as the Aussie/S.A fieldsmen if not better. Im not saying they're the best in the world, but they are up there. The best fielder in my eyes, who is currently playing would be Michael Clarke.

Fleming's a pretty useful slip fieldsman too. In terms of a fielding unit as a whole I think both Australia and New Zealand are the best- especially in the slips and inside the circle.

NZ are full of Michael Hussey in the field. Energetic, quick, agile and enthusiastic. Nobody said talent makes your team the best fielding side. NZ overall, certainly is right up there. But, I guess if you pick out individuals you will find they come from all sorts of teams I guess.

I'd go with Gary Pratt just for producing the best and most amusing piece of fielding I've ever seen.
