Where's Chris Gayle? I did not hear his retirement.

Shariar Nafees from BAN is also better in tests than some like Jayasuriya or Sehwag on current form.

When starting a thread it's expected that you'll have some comments of your own - if you don't , then they usually get closed pretty quickly.   I'm still thinking about that!

It's Alastair Cook my cat's whisker over Hayden. Don't know why you's are considering Gayle his highest score is 91 or something for the whole of 2006 and averaged only 39.

Virender Sehwag without a doubt.

Actually I would go for Graeme Smith because I think that he was the best of the lot last year.

Everyone has bad form, you should think to the future and realise he will be good in a few months. Maybe you are unable to do that though..

I doubt a few months are going to sort out Sehwag's problems, his technique has fallen to pieces and he doesnt seem to be putting any effort in.

Langer and Hayden are the best at the moment. Can't really see no others!

Sehwag can't be the best opener right now, whoever says must Sehwag must be high. Even tailenders are better than him.

Hmm, no half-centuries for 60 odd ODI matches?

the whole point of the thread is AT THE PRESENT TIME - not "should he happen to rediscover his form somewhere down the line".

Langer isn't a Test opener any more either so doesn't belong in the poll.

Darren Ganga has had a successful test year in 2006 I reckon he's pretty close to best at present but Hayden & Cook still beat him.

To be honest, there arent many decent openers anymore. Hayden probably edges it and I trust that Sehwag will come back soon after maybe a year or so off? He should play more domestic stuff, get his confidence back, get some intensive training done and then return.

Sehwag's sweat spots have been spotted by the bowlers, pretty big technical flaw, isn't it. I mean you cann't be serious to face the express bowling with your bat and pad miles apart. He doesn't have a extraordinarily eye either and even if he does, it's eclipsed.

And by the way, Chris Gayle deserves to be on the list.
