He would not be my choice for sure, but if How, Farhat and Hafeez make the list, then Chris Gayle must be there.

I can't believe the lack of decent openers in world cricket. |

Not really the lack, just mean a lot of them are out of form. Sehwag, Smith - well until recently - De Villers, Cook, Strauss are all good players but are struggling at the moment.

When you look for a test opener, you want a solid defence, consistancy, and confidence, so to my mind only one player who had everything was justin langer, all others have been corrupted by shorter version tend to play a shots too many and unnecessarily. Cook and strauss probably will come after him but they have a lack of consistancy and seen them unnerved by quick bowlers!

There is a lack or quality best openers in comparison to previous decades. In saying that we are going through a new era in cricket. So come on Alister Cook. |

For some months I have argued with you on many things, mainly Bond vs Lee but I agree totally here. I am fine putting together a world XI from 3-11 but two openers I struggle to find. Look back to the 90's, 80's etc, they were numerous but today the fact that Hayden is probably the pick is not good.

Judge the player not by their stats, but by their opposition.

Are you serious? Your bias is unbelievable! Langer has retired for one! Secondly Hayden has only been performing recently in the one day era. I still maintain that no opener has performed well lately and this thread should be scratched until someone does!

being retired don't mean a thing
opening is very challenging, so I wouldn't expet openers to do as well as over batsmen |

If you look extra carefully you will notice that the thread is a 'present time' thread meaning players that are currently playing. Langer has retired meaning he is not a current player.
Your grammer makes it hard to understand your point also. You mean other batsman? I doubt Hayden agrees with you. A couple of years ago he was making batting look a lot easier than the likes of Ponting and Martyn. Edited by bond2322 - 02 April 2007 at 9:48am |

Verendar Sehwags got to be right up their. He's an exalent attacking batsmen. I don't know about Hayden, I've seen many times when he worked so hard to survive the opening pase attack, That he looses concentration and ends up edging the ball to the slips or the WK, In his 20's. |

That's Hayden's style and it works so no need fussing about it when it doesn't pay off.

Hayden is definitely my favourite, the walk down the pitch is second to none!
Apart from him, I'd be inclined to mention someone like Cook or Smith.

Virender sehwag , his last ten test centuries have been 150 plus scores, two triple centuries, fastest triple century against a decent attack ,excellent average ,good performance against good attacks, hes the most special batsmen at the moment as its amazing how much does he dominate a score card of india when he plays well ,FANTASTIC in every sence of the word, Edited by jaysjay - 02 July 2008 at 11:00pm |

Sehwag is a world class player but i dont think he is reliable so for me Hayden is the best test opener at present time. |

Ok, what's the deal here? You folks trying to rub salt in the wound for Pakistan not having any decent openers.
You should've spared us from this torture by not including any opener from the Pakistan team. Especially not him...ugghhh...Farhat, anyone but him.
