Just a quick one. Is the a rule that stops bowlers wearing caps whilst bowling? My son has long hair and likes to wear his cap during bowling but keeps being told to remove it. Is this correct? Cheers |

Geoff Boycott used to bowl in his cap (turned backwards) so I can't
imagine there is a rule against it. If Swerveman sees this thread I am
sure he can put you right.

Although if it is distracting the batsman, he might feel obliged to ask the umpire to get the bowler to remove it.
However, there are several stories of batsman asking bowlers to remove watches/armbands which just fires them up even more so it might not be such a good idea. |

Like Dean Jones Asking Ambrose to remove his wrist bands, which made him about 2mph quicker.

I don't think there's anything in the laws to stop you wearing a cap while bowling. I guess it just gets in the way sometimes.

the only problem with a cap is if it blows off during delivery, as if it is hit it will cost you 5 runs, and also may constitute a dead ball, depending at what stage it blows off, i think. you could turn it round to stop it blowing off, however it tends to get in the way of getting your arm up by your ear. solution head band or hair cut |

I heard someone say to me the other day that he wears a brightly coloured armband on his other hand to distract the batsman! He may have been joking but i'm not sure |

I think the only problem might be if it is the same colour as the ball and destracting to the batsman, same as red wrist bands or similar. There is no rule per say about wearing a cap, but if the above was causing a problem then it's up to the umpires discretion as to wether or not it should be removed.

I remember hearing that in Malinga's first test series, against New Zealand, the NZ batsmen asked the umpires to remove their ties as the ball was coming from the umpires chest and they couldn't pick it out

Slight variation on this one, wicket keepers with red palms to there gloves so some times its tricky to see if they actualy took a ball.

Under the LAW 42 FAIR AND UNFAIR PLAY:
Section 5. Deliberate distraction or obstruction of batsman In addition to 4 above, it is unfair for any member of the fielding side, by word or action, wilfully to attempt to distract or to obstruct either batsman after the striker has received the ball. + It is for either one of the umpires to decide whether any distraction or obstruction is wilful or not. And also another important segment of Law 42 your son needs to know is Section 18. Players' conduct If there is any breach of the Spirit of the Game by a player failing to comply with the instructions of an umpire, or criticising his decisions by word or action, or showing dissent, or generally behaving in a manner which might bring the game into disrepute, the umpire concerned shall immediately report the matter to the other umpire. |

You can wear your cap untill the batsman asks umpire to remove it which can disturb his concentration. |
