Topic: Champions League 2009 Posted: 04 October 2009 at 10:23am |

To be honest, I don't care much about this tournament. Its just a ridiculous attempt to make more money. If they do so many of these tournaments, soon people will lose interest. This seems so pointless specially after the Champions Trophy. Its just my thinking and it may differ from others.

I don't mind this tournament. They do this in the soccer (football) where the best clubs from each continent basically play each other to see which club side is the best. This isn't the worst idea by all stretches of the imagination and it's nice to see all the different sides outside the IPL ones. I've never seen any of the SAF or English or NZ domestic sides before and it should be rather interesting. Of course this is a money grabbing exercise, but at the end of the day domestic teams don't make much money at all, if any, so I don't mind seeing such an event. I definitely think my boys, the Victorian Bushrangers are right up there to win this. They have a very, very strong batting line up. While the NSW Blues have a lot of international experience in their side. Aussie sides will be the ones to look out for certainly.

Had there been a team from Pakistan I just might have bothered to sit and watch. But - it wont really bother me much without them. We can't really compare it to the Football Champions League - they have their fan base and loyalties. Cricket I guess will always be followed at national team level.

The teams here have some fan following. Most following when it comes to domestic cricket is based on one's favourite players' team. I'm probably not going to watch too much of this anyway, I'm not a massive 2020 fan and I'd rather watch international cricket.

I think it's fair to say Otago are the underdogs in this competition. They could be a thorn in the side for the other teams in the group and have an upset win since both(?) McCullum brothers and Dmitri whatshislastname are in the squad.

2020 evens the playing field out a great deal. So you'd say anyone's a shot here, especially if all the teams playing have been able to handle the pressure in their own domestic leagues and win finals and so forth.

Look out for that team called Wayamba from SLN. Looks a very decent team and may surprise everybody.
I'll support the Deccan Chargers, my home team although It won't matter one bit to me even if they lose.

Same here Sam. I won't be losing sleep if my team loses. I'm not an overly passionate Vic supporter, they're more of an adopted team since I moved to Melbourne. Was always an NSW supporter before then, but obviously I'm not particularly committed!

I'll be backing Trinidad, they're my West Indian pals! I am expecting them to upset Somerset and Trinidad are far more accustom to slower, lower pitches as that's what they grow up on in Trinidad. Also, they have some decent spinners to use up the conditions.
Go T&T!!

I hope he lives up to the hype and actually ends up being better than Rohit Sharma if and when he is given a chance to play for India.

I would like both of them comming good. They both will come good, it's only time dips. They will have to bide their time till some seniors make way.Meanwhile Pujara is also fine esp for Tests.

spin some insight on T&T.What about Adrian Barath? Seems Lara spotted when he was 11 years old. Then there is Darren Bravo. It will be interesting to watch them.
I don't know much about other teams but will be keeping a close watch on Aussies future talent Henriques, Hastings, Holland and Pattison.Apart from these Ken's son Hamish Rutherford and Mike Gatting's nephew Joe will keep me interested.
This tournament should be good, what needs to be seen is crowds during non-IPL team matches and if by chance none of IPL teams make it to next round.

Not sure Barath will start, there are more brisk scorers in the T&T squad than Barath. Barath is quite suspect to the short ball but that won't be a problem seeing he's in the sub continent. Darren Bravo will be like Lara, if you don't get him out, he'll score them entertainingly.
They have a pretty good T20 side, surely not to be taken lightly! Middlesex and England found out that late last year.

I'm not too inspired about this tournament at the moment. There's been a hell of a lot of cricket lately and domestic cricket is not going to keep me in complete attention.

True that Sam. He is already transforming his talent into substance. Saw a glimpse of his last night innings - it was good. was not that spectacular maybe. I did not like the ground surface - it was hard to dive on and the boundaries were small as well. I must say I am not interested because there is no Pakistan team playing. Sialkot Stallions has the best T20 records in the world.

yes, in fact a team from pakistan would have made this tournament come alive. Ind can love Pak or hate Pak but they simply can't ignore Pak! They should have been here and this league would have been a very big success.
I didn't saw the entire game either but did saw some of Duminy's Innings... He almost single handedly won this for the Cobras! this is the uniqueness about T20's, it's not necessarily a team effort, one individual's brilliance can win the game for you.

Every match is being shown on satellite here and because the Cobras were playing I gave it a go. A decent start for the tournament , but those boundaries and that pitch loads everything in the batsmen's favour. 180 looked defendable though , especially after Herchelle fell first ball. Lovely knock by JP though , he's very pleasing on the eye. Modi will be counting all that dosh . He might get up my nose , but he's pretty shrewd!

Yeh it's on free to air HD television here. That's how they are making the money, TV rights and corporate sponsorship. There's next to know one in the crowd tonight for this NSW v Eagles game and it's a Friday afternoon. Not much atmosphere at all and the wicket is absolute rubbish.

It's a waste of time. What's the point of it? Cricket is unique, we thrive on international action, nobody cares that much about club/domestic cricket. Especially now with these made up IPL teams which have 7 rubbish Indian cricketers in each of them. If any of the Aussie guys get injured playing this crap before the summer tests I'll be pretty annoyed.

NSW have only made 144, but they have a top attack - Lee, Clark, Bollinger, Haurtiz, Henrqiues. All have played for Australia at some stage, the first 4 have all played tests and ODIs and Henriques has played a T20 int'l.

Well I think the IPL teams will be pretty poor, especially at the start. Mainly because of poor team chemistry. There are some sensational players in those IPL teams. Its only a matter of time when they start to trigger together.
On the other hand, the Aussie sides are well balanced and have the players have played together in domestic competitions so the teams look in better shape.
