Topic: Closing Threads Posted: 29 September 2006 at 8:25pm |
I'm not trying to sound aggressive or annoying but I can't really see the logic in closing the threads anymore. It's not like they get deleted and leave space for other threads, they're just ''locked,'' and they sit there when there could be a discussion going on inside them. Surely they should only be locked if they're going to cause offence or start a giant argument wih something like racism or religion. Some threads I understand why they are locked, for example ones which really have nothing to do with cricket anymore and just flog things there, but others get locked because someone wanders slightly off the path for 1 or 2 messages.
Everybody goes off track some times, and everyone will eventually find their way back onto the track. My point being, people may wander off the beat and track and the point of the thread for a few days, but they'll get back on pretty quickly in the vast majority of cases.
Most threads that are locked don't really bother anyone else, usually everyone who takes part in a particular thread is having a good time, but by locking it they feel as though they've had their happiness taken away from them and thus feel tentitive about writing any more posts in case they're struck down by the mighty hand of the moderator.
In conclusion, I feel you should have a bit more leniency when closing a thread, but I have very few doubts that this ultimately, as stated in the three paragraphs preceding this one, will be locked. Furthermore, there will always be a person who can guide the topic back on track; people forget where they are sometimes and blabber before they realise what they've done, and then discover the thing's been closed.
As a mere survey done on29/9/06 on the 1st page of this section, 71.42% of topics were COLSED. Is my point proven?
This is not an argument; this is a heartfelt piece and I ask you to consider what is incorporated in it before, I presume, it is locked...

Fishcake most threads are locked simply because there are already numerous other threads on the very same, or similar topic. It really boils down to a matter of people looking for the old topic, instead of making new ones each time.

Still can't see the point in closing them, they don't disappear, they juust get shut and it means there's less to talk about. I wasn't just on about my own thread, what about all the other things that get locked? People seem to want to lock threads after every second post!

Well, as far as I ve been concerned, the mod do a pretty good job and they close the threads for the right reasons as well. The thing that surprised me the most is why the spin thread from fishcake wasn't closed a long time before so really fishy, you had more than enough fun on that one. It should have been closed since they can't you for fraud.

You are perfectly fit to assume a mod's role then!
Just kidding. Seriously mods are doing a pretty good job to keep the CW forums intact and to the point, otherwise these forums would look like a living hell with blood all around.

why do people keep complaining about the mods?\
they know more about this site than anyone else, and most of them have got
like 4000 posts! they definately know what they are talking about, and
probably know what is best for the site more than the complainees(what a
cool word)
leave them alone, they have enough to do without getting constantly
nagged!

The mods decide what stays and what goes and what stays. If you can't deal with that I suggest you go to another forum.

That was a good reply, but it wasn'y meant to be funny. It was serious.
Why doesn't this thread be deleted. It's leading to nothing. The fight is over and majority agree that you were wrong fishcake14.

I have an idea....
instead of closing threads, when they get no replies for like 2 months, put them at the top of the list. noone replies to old ones because they are hard to find , so by putting them back at the top of the list, they will get noticed!
just a little idea

That's what everybody does most of the time vettori no.2. You haven't been around for a while now, so you must not have seen what's been happening lately. Thankd God you came back. Finally one more good poster. It's been a while since someone good has come. By the way, have yuo been on this forum al day. When I came on last night, you were on, and 15 hours later, yuo are still on.

I know you forgot about it. I too forgot about it for a couple of months.
The reason I called you a goodposter was because you don't post crap. But let me tell you one thing. Don't go for Quantity of posts, go for Quality of posts. Than you will be better. That's what I learned although not that good at it yet.

I don't think I will become Moderator so easily.
1. There are 3 people who have posts heading for 3000 faster than me.
2. Too young to become Moderator.
3. 80% of my posts haven't been good and useful posts.
4. We already have 2 Mods and the forum will not want any other for a while.

Not yet. I don't want to. To be honest I don't know what thread should be deleted, and what posts must be deleted. It a very tough job. I have a long way to go to achieve it.

If you are determined and focused on providing good posts on this forum by coming on everyday, then let alone 300, you will reach atleast 1000.

Are you guys saying that if you reach 3000 posts, you should automatically become a mod? Like DF said, its quality of posts. No offence at all, but I'd rather have spin wizard as a mod than most others with more posts. Although, having said that, we have enough of them already!
