I thought I'd set up a topic, although the moderators can play around with this if they see fit, where we'd talk about one cricketer each week and our memories of that cricketer.
The first one I wanted to go with was Saqlain Mushtaq, a guy I watched a lot of when I was a kid and someone who inspired me to dabble with a bit of off spin myself. I've actually gone to the nets and tried to bowl the doosra with a little bit of success! I watched this video of him on Youtube, and it's absolutely awesome. It's footage of a younger Saqlain, in times of more success. Absolute must watch if you're a fan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhqXPuUaGZ8&feature=feedlik Next week we shall choose another cricketer to discuss ![]() Edited by Mikey - 24 May 2011 at 7:37am |

Was a fine offspinner in the early part of his career. I think, he got carried away and tried too many things. Had he continued with the traditional approach to his bowling, it would have been good for the game and himself. He knew all the subtles of traditional offspin bowling, had an excellent control and still tried some other things. That is the disappointing part.

I've no problem with the idea , but just who chooses the player ? It could become very messy if several members promote different players. Edited by Sledger - 24 May 2011 at 6:44am |

Saqlain was my first idol - I started off spin after seeing him and tried to model his action. He was such a fine bowler - I regard him as the finest off spinner that I have seen - Pity he was not handled well by the PCB and wasn't taken care of when he injured his knee. Was easily a 500 test match wicket bowler.

It's just so interesting to see all these commentators confused about his doosra... calling it 'the ball that drifts away' or a top spinner, etc. He had us all confused. He's actually the only bowler that can bowl that delivery properly, the way he locks his wrists as he puts it, means he keeps his arm straight... where as other bowlers almost turn their who wrist around and it doesn't obviously look legitimate.
Such a fine bowler in his pomp, but yes I think he got carried away with the doosra and needed to keep things simple. His offie could actually turn a fair bit! Sledger, I'd be more than happy if you wanted to be the selector and choose the player each week. Or perhaps any of the other moderators or even myself if that's what you guys think is best. |

I saw him play in 2007 when India were last here as he turned out in what was very much a Sussex B team. He gave Dravid and co. the occasional headache and if he remember he took a wicket - possibly Dinesh Karthik's on the day I was there. He's currently turning out for Somerset Seconds - I guess that is testament to his love of cricket more than anything.

I don't even think he's hit 35 yet. Should still be playing for Pakistan to this day, what a waste. He should have at least been in the ODI side.

Was a terrific spinner. The only one to have consistently done well against the Indian batsmen. That in itself says a lot. Very astute, skilled and confident cricketer. I've marveled many times at his death bowling competence. Was one of the best ODI spinner of all-time.

Maybe the last poster on the thread at the end of the 7th day should post the new player - I'll call on that poster to do so each week. Edited by Sledger - 26 May 2011 at 7:38am |
