Good Morning all,

recently i have been getting out by edging the ball to the slips a lot!

the problem is i see the ball well and its not a genuine edge getting out by the bowlers pace as i am trying to play the ball through the covers.

i seem to have picked up a habit that i didn't have at the start of the season!

i feel the problem could be caused due to having lazy/bad footwork!

could anyone give me any tips to stop this happened.Smile

Regards Phil

I am mostly conscious about getting caught behind myself so that's why I opt for the square drive off lengthish balls instead of the cover drive and use the cover drive mostly for balls that are right up there.

i have the same problem as you, you are misreading the ball slightly, it is on a driving length but it is slightly wider than u think, either because of the swing or just because you misread it.
just wait for it a little more, get your foot slightly mroe square and square drive it, just as SW said.
either that or you are poking at it, you are going to play a shot to that ball but you then decide it is too wide and you should leave it because you probably wont time it becuase of the swing or you misreading it again, that means you are stopping half way through your shot and maybe slightly withdrawing your bat letting the ball find the edge,
again, here you must wait and either leave it and play it more square, really you must work on leaving almost all things outside off stump, unless it is only just wide and you can see its not going to do anything

with your footwork, you jsut need to get as near as you can to the ball with your feet and dont push too much as the ball, ust let it come onto the bat and play through the shot.

Square drive seems the best option nobby, just have a look at Lara at those wide balls.  He square drove many of them with brutal power - if it edges, most likely, it will fly over or too hard at times for the fielders to cling on to them.

Thanks for the reply inswinger and spin wizard! i went to training last night in the nets and in the middle and the coach who was watching me said that i not getting in line with the ball and therefore my bat is sort of flapping hence getting the edge whn trying to play a cover drive!

i also got told that i dont need to play every shot as i am constantly trying to score runs with every ball that is wide and not a threat to my wickets!

thanks again for your help you were both able to understand my problem without seeing me bat! maybe you could help the likes of Flintoff and vaughan get some runs and to stop playing bad shots!

From my limited experience I agree about getting the front foot across and not just forward. This is definitely something I've seen a lot. Also, seen lots of wide-ish drives played off the front foot that could possibly be played more safely off the back foot.

Get the skipping rope out and work on good positive footwork.

try this.

lead with your head, then sholders, then feet.

get your head right on the line of the ball first before the shoders and feet follow.

Just moving your feet will defo lead to an edge.

Guys,

i am finding it difficult to select shots to play aginst off- spinners.

generally i pull, if its anywhere near short, else wait for the ball to reach me and work them on the on-side.

i cant seem to play cover drives against off-spin

i have tried hopping down the pitch, playing with the spin and lofting the ball over the bowlers head.. worked many times, but sometimes when the ball doesnt spin, its an easy stumping.
Any advice is welcome!
