I dont think so. They will be trashed again this year in Sri Lanka and India. In this pressure they will also have a tough series agains South Africa. They ended year 2011 as 1st in ranking and could end the year 2012 5th or lower.

No, ENG won't go down just like that, they can win in SLN and against India it depends, the old players aren't going to be world beaters anymore, and the youngsters may find it tough against ENG, but yeah they might lose to RSA.

Mohsin - Misbah pair was together for the last time in a test series, Dav Whatmore is almost certain to take over starting Asia Cup, good for him because both the Asia Cup and the Bangladesh series in April are the ones Pakistan are expected to win.

I agree with Zuhair, this team has a lot of work to do before they become the world no.1 team, a dominating team, the openers need to improve, the pace bowling will be tested, they won't be able to play two spinners all the time, although their next major overseas series will only be in Feb 2013 against RSA so there is sufficient time for the team to get settled and try out several options. I'd like to see some openers being tried out in ODI's and also some fast bowlers like Sadaf and Talha and may be even the leg spinner Yasir Shah so that Pakistan can have a good set of players waiting in the wings.

I agree with Sam i dont see India or SL doing what Pakistan did both have a very weak bowling attack and we might see alot of draws in that series as i doubt India or SL will be able to take 20 wickets on flat pitches.

SL has a very poor bowling attack, it will be a run-fest for the English batsmen when they tour Sri Lanka, I don't doubt that. Sri Lanka is further handicapped by again being in a leadership transition and have an ineffective top order - too reliant on the old guard.

India will be a tougher challenge for England and India proved in the recent ODI series that England don't quite have what it takes to dominate in Indian conditions. All India really need is one or two of their batsmen to make runs (unlike in Australia) and England will lose that series as well - someone like Ashwin will turn the ball a lot more in India and I expect Ojha to not only play, but to also take a lot of wickets when England tours India. India are so confident at home, and rely on their ability to win at home to keep their pride and egos in check. I'd back England to win in Sri Lanka, mainly because of the latter's incompetence, but India should beat England.

Batsmen are far too slow to place Pakistan in a successful position in places like SA and Australia - certainly the Pakistanis need an injection of stroke makers, Hafeez is really the one one that ever looks like going up a gear. Hopefully some more batting talent can be discovered in the near future.

Pakistan also need to find a genuine keeper/batsman, not just a keeper who is okay with the bat. Someone who is a lot cleaner with the gloves than Kamran, but can also make more runs than Adnan.

Another thing that Pakistan will want to do is to start picking some more 150kph+ express type bowlers. I'm 100% sure they exist and those guys will be useful outside of the UAE and subcontinent, more so than Rehman and Ajmal.

I agree with Milkman that Pakistan will have to find a few batsman that can up the pace.

Yes sam, but he's not playing.  This batting line up won't scare any teams away from the sub continent, the bowling will have to do the work.

I am hoping Afghanistan will give Pakistan a tough time in the field today. I am not sure about their batting but their bowlers will be more than handful.

another 5 wicket haul for Shahid Afridi, how many he has had in recent months??!! Scintillating stuff from Shahid bhai, he is a legend.

The Afghans fought well I thought, esp early on they took the attack to the bowlers, they are a good associate side, but I'd still rate them behind Ireland, Holland and Scotland. They are surely better than Kenya and Canada though and if 4 teams are to qualify for the 2015 WC, I'd expect the Afghans to join IRE, HOL, and SCO for the grand event.

I disagree. I think they are already better than Zimbabwe, Scotland and Netherlands. They will soon catch up with Ireland. they are a hugely talented side - saw their opening bowlers operating. India would love to have them playing in Australia. They are all fit lads - And Afghans when they take up thing seriously really make it count. I see this side being a real force in world cricket in the foreseeable future. they played Ajmal with utmost ease - that switch hit six off Ajmal must be a lesson for some of the Englishmen.

They are a talented bunch I agree, and it looks like cricket is extremely popular in Afghanistan.

I'd still be a little hesitant to compare them with Associate and Regular members though, apparently they are still an 'affiliate' member, but this is a fast progressing side that's for sure.

The qualification for this years WT20 will be held next month and I must say since only 2 teams can make it to the event, it'll be very close among IRE, AFG, NET and SCO. I was impressed with Scotland's results last year, they had beaten IRE and NET in ODI's.

The only way for England to win any of the Odi is to bat first otherwise i dont see them chasing anything over 150 against Ajmal, Afridi and Hafeez.

A very good 260 for ENG, another fine century by Cook, so PAK have got some work to do now.

I agree, ENG cannot be underestimated mystery, they are a good side, PAK need to be at their best to be able to win the series.

I'd like to see Shoaib Malik come in at No.3 with Asad coming in at 6 and Umer Akmal and Afridi at 7 and 8. Malik coming in at 8 is way too low for him, even 7 is low for him, but then 7 is too low for Umer too.

Disgusting performance by Pakistan, first of all I'm not at all happy with all the spinners in the world operating right from the word go, look at Finn and look how well he's bowled, this is not a test match pitch, this is an ODI pitch and you've got to have faith in your faster bowlers.

Asad is not an ODI player and he needs to go, I like him as a test batsmen but in ODI's he just has to go, no need to risk Umer Akmal as the keeper, they've got to get Adnan in, Malik has been disgusting as well but may be he can be given one last chance at No.3, he's got to come good now, or else, bye bye.

Hafeez, Farhat, Malik, Younus, Umer Akmal, Misbah, Adnan Akmal, Afridi, Ajmal, Gul, Wahab. Has to be the line up.

Umer has to bat higher up the order. If Malik continues to fail I would definitely suggest Hammad Azam for the 3rd ODI.

I'm very very disappointed at the manner of defeat and the kind of show they put up today, got to get things right in the next game. Very sad performance today. Angry

Its okay Sam but the most important thing is to win the toss for me batting first win you the match as both teams are weak chasing and Umer's keeping was fine no need to change it specially with Razzaq not playing but i want Farhat to get out!! he is useless.
My lineup would be -

Hafeez, Shafiq, Malik, Younus, Umer, Misbah, Hammad, Afridi, Ajmal, Gul and Wahab/Junaid

Pakistan have a lot better players than Farhat and Asad. Even Azhar ali would be better than Asad. Best Line up would be: Hafeez, Ahmad Shehzad/Nasir Jamshed, Younus, Umar (wk), Misbah, Umar, Afridi, Razzaq, Ajmal, Gul, Cheema/Wahab

Cook played levely Innings today. He scored more runs than the whole pakistani team.

They should not be risking Umer Akmal has he tends to have those back problem mystery, Adnan is not that bad a batsmen so he can come in, more so because Malik and Asad are easily replaceable at the moment. Winning the toss is obviously very important but even then such a meek surrender is just not on.

I agree on Ahmed Shahzad, he is a very promising youngster and should get the nod, Razzaq has been very inconsistent so I think giving Hammad a bit of a run won't be a bad idea.

As for Farhat, we all agree, we are used to seeing his one half century followed by 5-6 failures, the selectors have to take a call, get Shahzad in and give him a run, just why they persist with farhat so much is beyond me, till date I don't remember one single match winning innings from him.

Finn looked a totally different class to everyone. This guy will be the world's best, no question. Has every attribute you could possibly wish for in a fast bowler. Where was this Cook during the Tests? He is the Kallis of this generation, unattractive to watch but mighty mighty effective and will end his career with great statistics.

Pakistan shouldn't be overly concerned. Aside from Cook, the rest of the England batsmen looked really poor against spin, including Bopara who should have been given plumb LBW when he was on 2 but that's what you get when you have some rubbish local umpire officiating international matches. That's also what you get when you waste your review foolishly when it isn't even close. Win toss, bat, negotiate first few Finn overs, post competitive total, get Cook out and it's PAK's game to lose.

Toss will be very important as both team cant chase well.
I cant see any point of bowling Hafeez too much. He is an opener first and should concentrate himself for batting. How can you expect good score from him when he has to bowl 10 overs in just one spell.

Kahmad dear he is on 2nd in the rankings :D he is now a bowling allrounder he is right behind Ajmal in the rankings and he should bowl atleast 8 overs in every match.

I'm OK with Hafeez bowling, he does a pretty decent job, esp under subcontinental conditions, but Pakistan are playing far too many spinners for my liking, anyways as long as they win, I'm fine. It's very important for Pakistan to continue this good run of form in ODI's, this series against ENG and then the Asia Cup are two very important tasks that need to be successfully completed. The next major targets then will be the series against AUS in August, then against RSA in March next year and then the Champions Trophy next year. Got to win all.

Get Cook out and it's simple says BP, but Cook just doesn't get out! what do you do then? Another century for the England ODI captain, 250 to win, thankfully Pakistan have started off well. Come on boys, need to win this.

Bad luck Sam we lost :( but still i think its not a big worry they need to fix few things but still they are a very fine team. I'm very happy dont care about the results now as we already the main thing (test matches) so now i just want to enjoy the matches and for the next 2 match whoever win the toss will win the game simple.

I dont like if an Opener is in the team because of his bowling. Hafeez has to concentrate on his Batting. His Bowling is just a bonus. Pakistani test team is pretty settled but odi team need to settle too.
Opners: You cant rely on them.
Middle Order (3,4,5): too slow. If they play 30 Over of an innings then Pakistan cant score more than 250 in first innings and cant chase anything
Number 6 & 7: Too much pressure to score quick and very few overs left because of the middle order.
Tailenders (8,9,10,11): Cant expect anything from them. Cant score more than 15-20 runs together.

They can atleast work on the batting order. For me the best Batting order would be:
Azhar Ali, Hafeez, Younus, Umar, Misbah, Afridi, Hammad, Adnan, Gul, Ajmal, Cheema
Azhar Ali should open the Innings. They would have 3 Pacers and 3 Spinners and this should be enough.
Pakistan has only one finisher at the moment and it is Abdul Razzaq. He is the only one who can finish a match. Misbah, Afridi, Umar Akmal never did that. They can bring you nearer but cant finish it.

absolutely agree with kahmed, good analysis that.

No Mystery, as a fan we want Pakistan to be the No.1 team across all formats... for me the ODI's are as important as tests and I would not say it's ok if we lose the ODI's.

It is a big worry mystery, what kahmed has written is true, while Pak have a settled test team the ODI team is just not up there, look at the top 5 none of them can score quickly, not even Hafeez, it's only recently that he has tried to be aggressive, otherwise he has always been a slow player. The only three good ODI players in the side (batting wise) are Umer Akmal, Misbah and Afridi and the pressure on them is too much.

I don't mean you have to be a dasher to be a good ODI player, NO. but you need to have the ability to accelerate when required, only the above three can do that, none among Hafeez, Farhat, Younus, Asad or Azhar look capable of accelerating when required, which is a serious cause of concern. Pakistan these days are very heavily reliant on their bowling to limit the opposition to low scores, otherwise they just can't win.

I would definitely want someone like Nasir Jamshed as an opener in place of Farhat. get rid of both Asad and Azhar from ODI's and get Ahmed Shahzad in at no.3, I don't know if Usman Salauddin is good enough at middle order, if yes then give him a bit of a go instead of players like Malik. Abdur Rahman is not OI type player, the back up option for Saeed should be either Yasir Shah or Raza Hasan. Junaid Khan should feature a lot more in the side as a third seamer.

Pakistan need to make the above changes, you cannot have same test and ODI teams, you've got to change for good, and I can only hope some of the changes are made at the earliest, perhaps once Dav Whatmore takes over.

Yes Sam i agree with what you said and i hope Pakistan win the last 2 match to level the series and i think we are missing Hafeez of 2011 in his last few ODIs he has started to play very slowly thats the reason he is struggling maybe Kahmd is right he should not bowl alot as he lose alot of energy and than he cant play his normal game.

PAK's batting is really really poor. It was an issue throughout the Test series but it was saved by magnificent bowling, hopelessly out-of-form ENG middle order and the ability to just keep blocking (good for slow batsmen like Misbah and Azhar). If I look down the PAK batting line-up, only Umar Akmal strikes me as a really good ODI batsman. Hafeez is below average batting-wise, Farhat is wildly inconsistent, Azhar is unproven in ODIs and Shafiq is no better, Younus is decent at best, Misbah is too slow, Afridi is practically a tail-ender and the tail after that is just woeful with the bat. They have been having it easy against pretty weak attacks over the last year but when you're up against the likes of Finn, all your weaknesses will be exposed and they have been. Pakistan don't really have many options tbh, just have to keep hoping the bowling does an exemplary job.

222 after a recovery by the two good ODI players Umer Akmal and Afridi... Pakistani bowlers have a tough task ahead now.

If they lose this, it'll be a disaster. Dav Whatmore where are you? Please come and make this test team an ODI team.

so a thrashing today, and Pakistan lose their first series after 6 successive series wins.

Good wake up call this, and couldn't have come at a better time with a new coach and his staff taking over from next series.  At least there won't be any illusions that nothing needs to be changed. While Pakistan have been remarkable progress in test arena, their ODI team has severe loopholes, the biggest being lack of ODI specialist batsmen and absolutely pathetic fielding.
