Hey,

Watching TV today, i was watching tait get a 4 for. Yet all the advice i hear is about accuracy, he has none and gets wickets? Also his actions buckles and would be avoided due to back problems.

I have an action like his (not quite as low) and get loads of pace, but not as much accuracy.

Doesn't tait go completely against coaching? As does maligna for that matter.

Depends on the coach - the likes of Fletcher, yes, Dav Whatmore, no.
When you win the toss - bat.
If you are in doubt, think about it - then bat. If you have very big doubts, consult a colleague - then bat.

sticking to the textbook 100% of the time never got anyone anywhere

look at murali, malina, tait, lara, pietersen

thats why vaughan will never be as good as some of the greats because he plays by the textbook too much

im not saying that you should go completly against stadard cricket but adding your own twist on things is what makes good players great

The extreme pace isn't entirely what gets Tait his wickets, it helps obviously but the fact the batsmen (and indeed the bowler...) have no idea where the ball is going so they cant plan for it. Also the pace combined with the angle that both he and Malinga let go of the ball at means its very hard to pick up the trajectory of the ball in the 0.49-0.59 of a second or whatever that you have to react to a bowler bowling in the 90s.

I'd say everything in cricket is about comprimise although this is only my view, extreme pace on its own probably wont get you many wickets, even pinpoint accuracy at 60mph is unlikely to get you all that much either. Either for what matter will swinging the ball, changing the pace of the ball or cutting the ball off the pitch if you have no accuracy.

I'd say you need to have all the basics first before really becomming good at doing one thing, personally my accuracy is pretty good, no Mcgrath but it goes generally the right area and i've worked on my pace to get it to the point where its threatening enough considering what the ball is doing elsewhere either through the air or off the pitch. So I guess my advice would be to follow coaching but to know your own game, play to your own advantages and know how you want to play. If you want to bowl at high pace then do that.

Well go through your runup slowly a few times and work out where the straight lines are, in general you want your shoulder and hips to be pretty straight, by that i mena it doesnt matter what angle they are at as long as they are parralel. This helps in two ways, it cuts down the strain on your body and the chance of injury and it gives you more power ad your hips can generate alot of extra speed and if your not straight then you will lose quite alot.

With most bowlers i'd say work on your arm as well, make sure that when your at the top of your action your bowling arm is in a straight line down your body with your opposite leg but as your not orthadox that wont help you very much.

Most people who sling it alot have a very long delivery stride, they dive in, plant their back leg and lean a really long way forward with their leading leg, this will make you go very low but it must help in some way (I cant give much advice on this i have never tried it, just comments from watching Tait and Malinga, the two who seem best at this form of bowling) I assume it means you can then catapult your entire body forward using your hips and upper body and then sling your arm through.

So just basically go through your action step by step and work out how you can get your body to produce more speed.

I always tell people to go by their style and not anybody else style. If you are doing it right that is. If you bowl leg break out of the back of the hand and get wickets, do it!
In troubled times, being philosophical helps a great deal, it helps you to remain sane and not do any further damage.

I find it unlikely you will be fast enough to warrant excessive wildness. Even if you bowl at 85mph+ if you are spraying it everywhere you aren't going to get chucked the ball very often until you learn control.
I swing both ways - but only when I'm bowling!

^ Pace is relative. Even 75-80+ is quick at club level and can rush batsmen. I doubt anyone here is a county or international player so you dont necessarily have to be pushin 85+ to be considered pacey.

I think do what comes naturally to you. Personally i bowl at a fair lick but whenever i cut down my pace and go for accuracy i end up getting smacked. When i just try to bowl fast it works for me.

If your fast but lack accuracy then my advice would be to get a lot of bowling practice under your belt. Theres no point changing your action or trying to be Glenn McGrath if your naturally a Shaun Tait, cuz it probably wont work. Just practice hitting a line and length at full pace.

extreme fast bowlers are told to do one thing - run in and bowl quick

accuracy can be learnt, pace is more a natural attribute so if you have you cannot abandon it.

No sense in this talk (I liked the straight lines one though). What's important is focus. As you run up, visualize the ball bouncing at a certain speed at a high speed and even the seam position ( for swing ). The skill for bowling fast and accurate is the skill of how well you can visualize the ball.
You'll get better and better. What's important is your run up - it should be rhythmic and slowly accelerate.
You never think about your action - your brain processes it.
A famous golfer let his secret out ( I don't remember the guy). He said before every shot he closed his eyes and imagined the ball landing right where he wanted it to. Then he would rewind it, and he would see him playing the shot (internally, not from an outside view).
You could do something similar.

You will get some pains in your body from fast bowling, first because your muscles are getting used to it and secondly because the human body just isn't designed to propel a ball in the manner in which cricket players do it.

If your back is hurting excessivly it probably means your hips and shoulders are not lined up and this is causing your spine to twist, which is as damaging as it sounds, go through your action slowly and work out where where shoulders and hips line up. they should be parallell.

At a young age I'd concentrate on bowling as fast as you can. Accuracy will come and can be worked on, even if it is a comprise for pace.

At your level I'd work on a stock ball that penetrates the batsman. Other than that I'd experiment with extreme pace and clever slower balls. Overtime with experience, swing and the ability to move the ball will come.
Good one Graham!

I think if your a fast bowler, and I mean a bowler who is trying to bowl as fast as he can, you should never slow down. Even if you are inaccurate. Slowing down wont really help you, what will is correcting your biomechanics and working on your action. Like practise bowling off 4 steps and just grooving your action, not trying to bowl fast and then after doing this for a while come off your full run up and try and bowl fast.
