Can anyone advise what the record is for a team total on the first day of a test match?

In this day and age of slow over rates , scoring 400+ like England did at Edbaston is a terrific effort - but it's not the record. Certainly Bradman's Australians of 1948 exceeded England's total , but not their strikerate. Going further back , the 1930 Aussies probably did well too - I'll try and find out who's the record holder.

The game where Bradman was 309* overnight on day 1 must be up there or thereabouts. I'm appalled that there is no copy of Wisden in my uni library so I can go and check this up.

I'm a Somerset man though. Went to see the day-nighter game between them at Taunton, that was a fantastic game, and we won to boot.

We might yet have Smith back again next season. Anyway, this crop of youngsters we've got in the team need time to bed in - come 2007, I'd watch out for us being right up there again.

Smithy has got a lot of cricket ahead of him before the start of the next county season JP. NZ 1st up , then India (both just ODI's) before the trip to Aussie. The Aussie's then go to SA to finish the series next March.

I would think that Smith was pretty popular in Taunton after his exploits this season - that knock to win the 20/20 must've been responsible for much cider spillage!

The record, as far as I can find - and this involved looking at scorecards from Cricinfo's list of highest test totals by a team, for a test total on the first day of a test match was 445-3 by South Africa against Pakistan in Cape Town, second test match, season 2002-03. Herschelle Gibbs and Graeme Smith both scored double-tons.
JH Kallis is the only player in history to have 8000 runs, 200 wickets and 100 catches in BOTH forms of the game. Only Sobers (tests) and Jayasuriya (one dayers) have achieved half that feat.

Of course it was Bokkie !! Blimey , I'm getting old - I was there and saw them highlight the record on the big scoreboard!

My memories of that thrashing was of Sami trying really hard on a beautiful batting track under clear blue skies and Waqar looking past it......at least he put some effort in , the rest of the Pakistanis folded like a pack of cards.

I wonder if Woolmer's sorted that problem out , if not , England will murder them.
