    Posted: 13 June 2006 at 4:42pm

Hello all,

Iam a decent front-foot batsman.. with a good range of shot selection on the off-side..

Iam not a power hitter and am more of an accumalator

However these days iam finiding that my forearms start hurting and become stiff after batting a couple of overs

Any help? Iam gripping the bad too hard? I use a very light slazenger with long handle

could be that its too light! considering its a light bat, you may be waiting really late, and hitting as hard as you can, whereas with a heavier bat, you are forced to use the body more to play the shot!

it also may depend on age, for example, until i was about 15, i never had any problems with tired forearms, but since then if i have a big innings on a sat, i may find that the forearms need some strecthing the day after!

boo ha ha!

Thanks guys,

Also, Iam around 6 feet tall.. sometimes i get a feeling iam leaning too much on to the bat..

I narrowed down to the lightest bat possible..

I keep tapping the ground with my bat till the ball is pitched.. Iam scared of standing a little taller with bath hanging in the air all the time when the bowler delivers the ball - as i can be a sitting duck for yorker..

may be iam just getting old.. iam 30yrs

Repetetive strain injury.

If you are doing a job whereby you are doing the same actions repeatedly, even typing or writing, this can result in pain in the forearms which may be exacerbated by playing cricket.

It wouldn't be a rpoblem, RSI that is, unless it is too heavy for you, and you a repeatedly repeating the movement wih a too heavy bat; its that, im sure of it

It could be any number of things - if you've only just started playing again after a break it might be that. When I started playing football again, the first few games left my forearms a bit sore (I'm a goalkeeper.)

Thanks guys,

I dont hold the bad hard.. and it indeed is a light bad (not a oblong handle though - it is a round handle)

May be it will help:

if i dont work them too much while waiting for the ball to be delivered.. like stand dead - till bowler is near the crease ready to spit the ball then raise the bat

OR

Just keep the bat in the air..

Iam actually playing after a break - but the thing is iam bowling with out a problem...

Will working the forearms with dumbells help? iam worried if it will upset my bowling rythym

Then the problem should start to go away after a few games/net sessions. If it doesn't then it is something else.

If the pain doesn't go away I would advise getting it checked out just to make sure it isn't something more serious than you think.

hi mate former test cricketer graham yallop told me if your forearms get tired it's becuase you're top hand(left hand if your right-handed) isn't strong enough. some exercises to strengthen this is squeeze on of those squeezy balls or just practise driving shots with only youre top hand.
hope this helps

I was going to say try doing some light hand weights to try and build up the muscles in the forearms. Usually aches like this are because the muscles aren't used to being used in that way.
