bullet Topic: England v New Zealand 2008
    Posted: 04 January 2008 at 1:02pm
Might as well start this since the England squads have been announced. The big news is that Matt Prior has been dropped from both forms of the game with David Graveney announcing that his keeping needs to improve. And to think this guy gets paid to be so knowledgeable. Tim Ambrose comes in almost out of the blue - James Foster must be sleeping with Graveney's wife or something to be so consistently overlooked.

In other news Andrew Strauss also makes a return to the Test squad, leaving a potentially tricky decision down the road for the selectors in relation to the batting order.

The squads;

England Test squad Michael Vaughan (capt), Tim Ambrose (wk), James Anderson, Ian Bell, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Alastair Cook, Steve Harmison, Matthew Hoggard, Phil Mustard, Monty Panesar, Kevin Pietersen, Owais Shah, Ryan Sidebottom, Andrew Strauss, Graeme Swann.

England ODI squad Paul Collingwood (capt), Tim Ambrose (wk), James Anderson, Ian Bell, Ravi Bopara, Stuart Broad, Alastair Cook, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Phil Mustard, Kevin Pietersen, Owais Shah, Ryan Sidebottom, Graeme Swann, James Tredwell, Chris Tremlett, Luke Wright.

England Lions squad Michael Yardy (capt), Kabir Ali, Michael Carberry, Steven Davies, Joe Denly, James Hildreth, Ed Joyce, Graham Onions, Monty Panesar, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Alan Richardson, Jonathan Trott.

And the fixtures

Surely Ambrose is just the stand in for Mustard?

I'd be genuinely astounded if Mustard wound up in the Test side, although I suppose he's the man in position as far as the ODI's go and if he makes a shedload of runs in those.....

Ambrose was named in England Lions squads last year, so he hasn't really come from nowhere. Of course, he played under Moores at Sussex...

...the latest news is that Flintoff is supposedly 99% sure to go to India as a batsman. My money is on the 1%.

Duleep Trophy fixtures:

Arrive Jan 24

25 – 28 Jan 3 day practice match at CCI, Mumbai

3rd Feb – 6th Feb Duleep Trophy vs Central Zone in Baroda

11th – 14th Feb Duleep Trophy vs West Zone in Baroda

19th – 23rd Feb Duleep Trophy Finals  in Mumbai (or three One-Day fixtures v opposition tbc)

Just thought I'd quote this here for 143:

Its the England Lions (performance squad or presidents XI in other countries), so wont include the top 8 batsman but up and coming players etc.

I hope you are right - I'd be far happier seeing him wrapped up in cotton wool until the summer then playing regularly for Lancs.

I have this awful vision of the Lions struggling in some Duleep match and Freddie striding up to Yardy going "give us the ball soft lad and let me send down a few"

Correction: the England Lions is the rebranded 'A' side so (hopefully) slightly better than a performance or President's XI.

Looks as if New Zealand will be without a fit Shane Bond as he's almost certainly going to play for the rebel league.

Good to see Strauss getting the call up.

England should prove victors in the tests but NZ may have an advantage in the ODI's. Bond is a huge loss for NZ, however, Mills and Martin have somewhat consolidated and stepped up to the plate.

That's disappointing to see Ed Joyce out of side. Just last year he was swaying Australia around the SCG, but unfortunately he wasn't able to cement a spot in the national side.

ed joyce?? He's inconsistent and hopeless to say the least, I'm afraid he never looked comfortable opening the batting at international level.

He's constantly chirping in your ear but he's a legend. How many other people can hold a claim to have reverse swept Murali for a 6? Can a NZ say that?

A reverse sweep for 6? I wasn't aware that McMillan even played the shot.

He always was more of a baton down the hatches sort of guy. When he was at the crease they should have given out protective helmets.%20%20%20

Hitting Murali for 6 is one thing but reverse sweeping him for 6 is another.

I'm sticking by my original predictions, as put in the predictions 2008 thread. I'm going for a drawn test series in NZ.
May go put a bet on it when it's closer to the time.

In the ODI's NZ should have the wood over England, though the test series is likely to go England's way without the fearless Bond.

McMillan was the first NZ player I saw to use the shot and he used it well, however, he often threw his wicket away with the shot and that's why I've never been a big fan of it. He was a rash player when he was young, trying every shot in the book and had some success with it too!

Seven one dayers , sheer madness !!  Strauss's inclusion wasn't surprising and the omission of Prior didn't really shock either.  Clobs is right again though , just who will make way for Strauss and what will be the order?

Could we be looking at     Cook , Strauss , Bell , Pietersen , Vaughan , Collingwood ???

It's not seven, Sledge, it's five ODIs and two Twenty20s.

At least I hope not, else I'll be doing some frantic reworking of our radio schedule...

Slightly better I suppose JP - still too much for me though and I won't be getting out of bed for any of them.   The tests are a different matter though - I'll be a nocturnal animal for the duration!

NZ will be slightly underdone for the tests one feels. Only two tests against Bangladesh isn't enough to find two decent openers, even though Bell made a convincing century against the struggling nation.

It'll be a close contest , but I do think that England have the edge in both batting and bowling. Home advantage will narrow the gap though.
