greetings everyone new to the forum and wold just like some tips on hitting sixes either straight or to long on or midwicket...i just started playing cricket again after not playing for ten years...due to the fact that the outfields here in the states are so poor (unbelievable high grass) i have had to change my game and aproch to scoring runs...ie i have to score my runs more i the air than on the ground....well my six attempts dont seem to go very far or very high..i use the gn predator i think its about 2lb 8 ounces (not sure but it is light)..anyway would appreciate any tips on technique or equipment...i have ben looking at the gn fusion and was wondering if this was a bat that was suited for six hitting...thanks

low middle, thick edges, bowed edge, looks like u need my bat -  Gray Nicholls Longbow!

I got the extreme version, its got a slightly low sweet spot, perfect for driving, its got pretty think edges, a bit less than an inch id say, and well its blade is bowed perfectly. great for me when i play over the ball and hit along the ground or transfer a bit onto backfoot and lift on long off/covers.

The one thing that I noticed that most ppl do (atleast here in the midwest league that I play in) is play with their arms only.  I don't know how to explain it, it's easier to show what I mean in person.  But imagine hitting a ball in the air but using only your arms, it's not going to go anywhere far.  I keep telling some of my teammates that hitting a 6 isn't hard at all.  Well your need your timing ofcourse and picking the right ball, but if you have that then hitting it out of the ground with timing is enough.

But if you want to hit some HUGE 6's then in my opinion you need to use your back, legs and arms at the same time.  Again easier to show it than explain it online.  I would recommend you to watch Dhoni and or Afridi and watch how their legs and back work together to get underneath the ball (for elevation) and to hit it with power.  You can specially see the legs being used with Dhoni and the back being used by Afridi.

I am going to brag a little and say that I do know a lil about hitting them over the boundary .  Scored a 147 off 82 balls, 131 (13 x 6's, 9 x 4's) off 57 balls, 113 off 62 balls, and just past weekend played a 20-20 in Nebraska and scored 97 off 40 odd balls (9 x 6's) in one of the matches, nevermind that the 1st match I scored only 12

Hope my post made some sense and helped you out a lil.

i have seen dhoni take a west indies spinner to the cleaners...he does use his torso a lot in hutting sixes..maybe i just need to strengthen my core muscles and get a little more flexible..i think that should help me get more power into those shots.....its amazing tho how these smaller batsmen can hit those long sixes.lara or sarwan for eg...and i have seen both in person  sarwan is a tiny fellow about 5'4"...timing is the key..appreciate it hades

try moving your feet a bit more or using differnet batting stances.

im not sure. the extreme has been im sure, but i think the longbow shield and 500 are still out. If anything the powerbow is still out, i think thats just a little heavier, or unstable Very funny.

Make sure you go at the ball hard when facing a fast bowler. If you connect you should get some good distance but if you mistime it, hopefully your edge will go fo runs.

Yeah, I personnaly think they should keep it but I suppose GN can't have too many bats to make.

It's important to time your foot movement, ie you're not going to get any power if you step forward, then wait a split second for the ball to a rrive and swing, you have to be transfering your weight toweards the ball as you hit it. Also, when going for the big one its easy to get sloppy with your shot, you still have to get your foot to the pitch, you still have to play the line of the ball and you still have to get your head in line. Don't sacrifice technique for leverage, althoguh of course there is more scope for the unorthadox than normal with these type of shots.

On a side note, if the grass is very long you can use this to your advantage singles-wise - if the ball holds up on the way to the fielder this gives you more time enabling you to sneak ones to fielders in the ring, often meaning the field will creep in making it easier to hit over the top

the type of bat doesnt matter, its just the technique you use, dont try to hit the ball too hard, but time the shot and use the bowlers energy to help direct the ball over the fence. my bat is over 35 years old, St. Peters supershield, NZ brand i think. nice wood in it though.

Whats you body type like america? bigger men generally use lighter bats e.g. Flintoff because they can generate enough power with their body. Smaller men e.g. Tendulkar use heavier bats because this gives them extra meat behind the ball.

To hit sixes you need 2 essential things:

1. Elevation. One way to get elevation is to lean back whilst playing a shot or to come up with the shot. Coaches often say keep your head down because this will keep the ball on the ground. To twist this theory if you keep your head down then rise as your hitting the ball, so you end with you head up the the ball will go high and far. Go to youtube and type in Afridi take a look at his head postion where it starts and where it ends.

2. Distance. Obviously power/timing = distance. A nice bat helps but ultimately you need to get the ball somewhere near the middle of the bat. Watching the ball until contact is the key. The rising with the ball theory also gives you good power as it makes good use of your upper body.

well my physique is average and im around 5'8" but i dont think size mattters much cuz i have seen smaller batsmen hit straight bat sixes with ease namely sarwan and tendulcar (not that im comparing myself to them).  and i have seen sarwan up close and u would not believe how small he is and skinny..but the key to hitting sixes over here is to pick the lenght balls because the wickets are so slow and the bowlers even slower  ...i tried going over the top in a couple of matches still couldn't clear the boundaries but i think its becayse im not in the best shape right now so its back to the gym in the offseason
