I'm a specialist batsman at playing spin (any kind),I've just started practising playing the leg cut,or cutter shot and I have improved alot since I first tried the shot but one shot I have trouble with is the hook shot, sometimes I time it well and hit it for 4 or 6 but other times I hit it 15 metres in the air and get caught can you help me with this, its the only shot I have trouble with everything else is a gem oh and I forgot to mention its tough playing a yorker I aslo need help with that inswingers espeically.

You know that shot that Martyn's an expert on,the one where you say a leg spinner bowled it then you wait for it to bounce and then like kind of slice it,not a good explanation it's a lovely shot actually.

Its actually the cut shot, and its a very useful shot to know, as Ak pointed out Martyn is a very good player of this shot. As for the help it is a very difficult shot to play the hook shot - I don't know if I can help you with it, although I'm sure someone else can. Anyway this might help its Sybil telling us all about batting. |

AK, try and keep the ball on the ground, or hit it as hard as you can (like me) and it'll always go for six or four. I guess the Hook Shot also comes naturally, I didn't need to practise it, I just got in the nets and timed them perfectly and thats the same with the pull shot.

I just came back from the nets with my friends and I found out if I try to defend too much then I get out, but if I play aggressively then I don't get out.
I still play most of my strokes on the leg side and off side. I did a Paddle Sweep and a Reverse Sweep to perfection against my friends off breaks and leg breaks. Cutted a few, pulled a few. I hardly blocked any, I may have blocked about 7 or 8 deliveries. I get my eye in, then play aggressive strokes. |

I tend to be too impatient to wait for bad balls, my patience is definitely my downfall!

maybe the way you play it AK
but a straight drive's meant to go past the bowler. Any drive is my speciality I struggle playing the hook/pull.

Pull shot is my favourite good with the drive's.But I thought I heard the commentators saying it was a straight drive when Mark Boucher hit it over the keeper, and Ashraful hit one for 6,I think rohan's right it could be a upper cutter

I think its funny how many people come to the forums and ask to resolve simple problems.

Oh dips you could simply not play the flick. there is no rule saying you have to play every shot its better to just play the shots you know best

But in some situations the flick would be the simplest and best shot to play and could mean 4 runs rather than a wicket.

I just came back from another net session with my mate. I only got out twice, which isn't too bad and those deliveries were balls which kept low. I played Cut shots, cover drives, flicks off the pads, on drives, straight drives, pull shots, sweep shots and paddle sweeps. I played them all quite well without risking my wicket. I also played late on the ball, I also got a pretty high backlift.

It's like you've got no style of play then. I used to be like you once and time after time of practising I had an off side game aswell. Now I'm hard to get out and I love it when I'm batting on a scorching hot day! Today was a hot day and it was like 30 degrees and my friend got annoyed and couldn't get me out because I kept punishing his bowling.

I have trouble going to the offside too, but my mates bowling is so incosistent (in other words rubbish!) that it doesn't matter if I only hit to the legside. Anyway I would also like to overcome this, any tips? |

My mates bowling today was rubbish aswell.
![]() You just have to wait for a ball just outside, or wide of the off stump before you can play some off side shots if your mates bowling is inconsistant. If I were you, just stick to playing shots on the leg side, if he keeps straying down middle and leg. |
