i dont believe how many of you are so gullible.
If the guy says he bowls 80mph that means he bowls at about 50mph.
Unless hes been tested by the proper speed gun, its a pure guess.
All bowlers are slower than you think, not everyone can bowl 160kmh when theyre 18.....

Jerome Taylor clocked 93 when he was 19. I know it's not 160 but that's still very fast! Taylor is slower these days because of injury to his back in the past and having to remodel his action but he is still consistently around 87 mph these days.

Its amazing how quick people actually think they are. Admittedly i thought i was bowling 70mph i got myslf speed gunned it was 55mph at the batsman so probably 60 out of the hand which is quite slow when compared to internationals but considering im am 15 years of age its reasonable. But i know i can get wickets from my extra bounce and swing. In the words of Glen Mcgrath the greatest seam bowler "speed is overated"

If you try and build your stength and muscle mass your pace will increase.

So funny people was telling you can't clock such fast speeds at a young age. Young Kemar Roach of the Windies clocked 87 against Aussie at age 19 and he can bowl faster than that too. I remember seeing Jerome Taylor clock 90+ at that age too. There was a young boy in the standford 2020 tournament in it's first year at age 16 and he was touching at 80 mph. Pascal at 19 was touching 87.

Besides building strength, is there anything that I can do with my action or the way I hold the ball... anything to increase pace?

I wish people would bother to look through previous threads about pace bowling, saves us repeating ourselves. Try watching this video http://www.metacafe.com/watch/299643/cricket_master_class_bowling/
If you have any more questions after that, just ask away! |

Yeah, just saw the video. I have actually seen it many times. I just want to know how to use my back and shoulders to increase my pace. pople have told me to use my back by leaning down, but I always loose my accuracy with it.

Hmmm, thats something i'm struggling to really good advise on.
Yes you do need to lean BACK a bit, but if you look at 99% of bowlers, they actually only lean back a very small amount. Without actually seeing a video of you, its hard for me to say if you need to lean back more or not, though give it a go, trying small changes in the amount you lean back and seeing if you can find a good position that allows more pace, without losing accuracy. |

if you need to use your back you need a good hip drive, every bowler with some sort of pace will have one of these, some more than others but it is a very good way of getting pace as it uses your midsection (abs, lowerback) and the hips are the powerhouse of your body
i think this is what you lack as you are 6 ft and you havenr got much pace
to get an idea of this think of a golfers hips when he drives the ball
a tennis players hips when he serves and hits most ground strokes
watch brett lee or shoaib to also the a good idea, you need to snap your hips through after front foot impact and you should be delivering the ball just after you ave finished it, really you need to watch it though. the releasing of the ball SHOUlD be the last thing to happen in the action to get the most pace.
i feel im repeating this from somewhere though, i made a long post about this with someone of your same problem??!

Dear Samir,
As a former medium pacer turned to a somewhat respectable medium-fast seamer I share your frustration in finding that elusive pace. The first thing you need to remember is that your physique, if underdeveloped, will limit how much you can progress.
You need very strong legs for load bearing (weights and plyometrics), a taught core for balance, a flexible back (pilates at home is good for most of this!) and fast - not big arms. Look at Brett Lee as a model of physique and you will notice these attributes. Particularly the last point, for your arms it is advisable you use a lower weight and do faster reps to train the right muscle fibres (fast twitch). Always consult a qualified gym instructo and your doctor before proceeding. If you're already on a programme, great!
Once you've established the strength its important to stay supple and relaxed. Pilates and yoga and good ole fashioned stretching before you train are advisable.
As far as biomechanics are concerned I find three things help me get the most out of my bowling:
An upright posture with the weight slightly forward and the head dead straight at the target (this is where the head must be until after the follow through).
Leading with the chest and hips during the delivery stride. Its as if you are being pulled from your stomanch. This creates a boomering shape to the body and increases the leverage of your bowling arm giving it snap.
Finally, shoulder rotation. It starts with your non bowling arm. I lead with my elbow and drive it down to my side which brings my hips into line with the batsmen without dropping my posture or collapsing my left shoulder (this should make it easier to brace the leg) and then the bowling arm comes over naturally and easily and with speed. Continue the movement by imaging you are driving the shoulder into the ground and show the batsmen the number on your back and finish with your right leg driving up and outwards to bring your right side completely over towards the batsmen.
(this for a right handed bowler)
Hope this helps all the best with the pace Samir

with pace bowling I have been told that getting through the crease (bowling action) also helps with pace, I have yet to try different ways to increase pace as I am getting over a buldged disc in my back but do people find that pace is created mainly from bowlers action, pace going through the crease, run up ect?

Yep, about 90% of the pace comes from your action.

It's no good running up like a madman if you lose all the forward momentum as you deliver the ball. How's your follow through?

A smooth aproach is the start of all great bowlers. Check out Holding, Marshall, warne, Murali, Steyn, Asif, McGrath. Compare that with someone like Sami who runs in harder and body tend to line up ackwardly and spray the ball around. Fidel Edwards is another too who I thinks put too much into that run up. Look at Brett lee, extremely fast and furious, yet doesn't have the speediest of run ups. Kemar Roach is another example, just trots to the crease but unleashes all that power at the last minute and lets them go at high pace.

Haha, funny enough I was reading back this thread and saw past posts saying it's blatant lies that a 16 year old bowls 80 MPH, watch ah load of rubbish. Amir at 17, was touching 88MPH, although me don't think he 17. Anyhow, Pascal was 19 and hitting 87 MPH, Roach was already hitting fast speeds at U19 and so was Jerome Taylor, which I can remember being clocked at 91 and 93 MPH at age 19 against Sri Lanka (whether the speed gun malfunctioned, I don't know). It is often said speed is something you're born with, not because it's hard for you mean it's hard for others.
There is a kid here, 16 years old, bowls quite fast for his age, from seeing McGrath live, I know for sure this kid speed is a bit faster so I'd reckon he'd be over 80 MPH and yet some guys who played against Roach when he was the same age told us "aryo think this boy quick, Roach was bowling much faster than that at the same age". Amir is most likely in his early 20s, it's quite probable.
Lee was bowling fast all through his youth, I'm sure he was touching 80mph as a 16 year old. It's rare, but possible for sure. It depends on the individual development as well, some kids are quite well developed by 16. |

Strength is important for fast bowling, but the ability to apply this strength as quickly as possible (explosive strength) is key. To build explosive strength, try sprint drills as part of your training program - this will also improve your overall athletic ability. As previous comments on this thread have outlined, yes - your bowling technique and action are key to bowling fast. Edited by -JP- - 12 September 2010 at 1:31pm |

Good point Freddy about explosive strength. Kemar Roach for fast bowler today is a good example. Hardly generates anything much from his run up to help him bowl fast but that last minute explosion of strength makes him belt them down fast. Malcolm Marshall had a fast arm action too which can be classified somewhat the same (quick explosive strength)
